Methods and apparatus related to message compression/decompression are described. A compressed message is generated by indicating what changes are to be made to a previous message to produce the message sought to be transmitted. The required change, in the form of at least one command and corresponding parameter, is transmitted as a compressed version of the message being communicated. This approach takes advantage of the fact that messages sent over time often include much of the same message content and only one or a few fields may have changed. The techniques are general and involve including a command in the compressed message along with at least one parameter. The command indicates processing to be performed on a previous message to generate the uncompressed message. The parameter may be, e.g., data to be inserted into the previous message or specify a location in the previous message where the change is to be made.

Message compression

Embodiments describe mobility management utilizing neighbor discovery and at least two pseudo wires. When a wireless device desires to handoff to a detected access router, such handoff may not be configured until such time as a current access router receives routing information of the target access router. In order to minimize handoff time, communication between the target access router and the wireless device can be through the current access router utilizing least two pseudo wires. Bidirectional neighbor discovery and create is conducted by the access routers allow subsequent wireless devices to automatically handoff between the access routers.

An apparatus comprising a policy enforcement point (PEP) configured to enforce firewall policies in a network, and a policy decision point (PDP) coupled to the PEP and configured to manage the PEP based on at least one firewall policy option received from at least one node. Methods and apparatus for compressing messages used to support mobile communications are described. After transmission of a first mobile IP message which may be a conventional mobile IP message, a compressed mobile IP message is transmitted. The compressed message includes a new 'compressed message' indicator and information which is to replace information in the previous message or to be added to the previous message to construct a new message. In some embodiments, the compressed message includes a mask field, e.g., a sequence of bits, each bit corresponding to one field of a standard registration request message or binding update message. If the mask flag bit corresponding to a field is set, it indicates that the compressed message includes information to replace the content in the corresponding field of the previous message or to be added to the previous message as a field corresponding to the asserted bit.

In various embodiments, communication apparatuses and methods for providing robust communications are disclosed. For example, an apparatus may establish an air interface in accordance with an orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) protocol. The claimed subject matter relates to systems and methods for authorizing services. A method includes receiving a set of data relating to Quality of Service (QoS) pre-authorization, and conditionally processing subsequent QoS configuration requests based at least in part on the pre-authorization information. Depending on the pre-authorization information corresponding to a QoS configuration request, the request may be granted, denied, or result in sending of a request for authorization.

In a system and method for handing off a mobile node in a seamless manner in a wireless access network, procedures are implemented for allowing the mobile node to synchronize the handoff with a base node (e.g., a home agent) and a correspondent node. In this way, a seamless handoff may be achieved, since few or no data packets sent between the base node or the correspondent node and the mobile node are lost. The procedures are supported by both Mobile IPv4 and Mobile IPv6 as well as Hierarchical Mobile IPv4 and Hierarchical Mobile IPv6.

Different bits in a payload of data to be transmitted from a sending application receive different classes of treatment. The payload data is divided into a first group of bits associated with a first treatment class and a second group of bits associated with a second treatment class. A first packet is created which includes the first group of bits and a first header that identifies the first packet with the first treatment class. A second packet is created that includes the second group of bits and second header that identifies the second packet with the second treatment class. Using the first header, the first packet is mapped to a first bearer that is configured to support the first treatment class. Using the second header, the second packet is mapped to a second bearer configured to support the second treatment class.

Method and apparatus for transporting different classes of data bits in a payload over a radio interface

Methods and apparatus for providing a hierarchical mobility management function for routing packets to mobile nodes are provided. The hierarchical mobility management function may be placed anywhere within the network and provide efficient use of IPv6 addresses. A node implementing the hierarchical mobility management function receives packets intended for the mobile node and routes the packets to the mobile node's current address. Load sharing of packets intended for a mobile node may be implemented across several access routers. Additional, bi-casting of packets is provided to allow for seamless handoff of the mobile node as it switches from one access router to another access router.
