A heat exchanger for a battery unit having at least a first battery module and a second battery module is disclosed wherein the first and second battery modules each include a plurality of battery cell containers each housing at least one battery cell. The first and second battery modules are spaced apart from each other with the heat exchanger being arranged between the spaced apart first and second battery modules. The heat exchanger is a laminated plate structure defining a plurality of fluid flow chambers each located within a respective fluid flow region for transmitting a heat exchanger fluid. Each of the fluid flow regions is dimensionally compliant independent of the other fluid flow regions to conform to the spacing of the respective battery cell containers in the first and second modules between which the specific fluid flow region is positioned when arranged between the first and second battery modules.

Conformal fluid-cooled heat exchanger for battery

A heat exchanger for a battery has fluid-carrying panels and defines a multi-sided enclosure for enclosing at least two sides of the battery. The heat exchanger has first and second fluid-carrying panels defining first and second flow channels, where the first and second fluid-carrying panels are arranged at an angle to another. The heat exchanger may also include a third fluid-carrying panel defining a third flow channel, and being arranged at an angle to the second fluid-carrying panel. The heat exchanger has first and second plates sealingly joined together along their peripheries and defining a fluid flow passageway between their central fluid flow areas. The second plate may be compliant, its central fluid flow area being deformable away from the central fluid flow area of the first plate in response to a pressure of a fluid inside the fluid flow passageway.

Multi-sided heat exchangers with compliant heat transfer surfaces

A system for warming/cooling oil circulating within a power and torque transfer system of an automotive vehicle is disclosed. The system incorporates at least a first heat exchanger positioned between the inner wall of the outer housing and the outer surface of a gear forming part of the gear system enclosed within the housing, for instance a ring gear and/or pinion gear. The heat exchanger is generally formed as a single tubular member for conducting a first heat exchange fluid therethrough, the tubular member being curved to generally follow the curvature of the geometry of the inner wall of the housing and to fit within corresponding annular gaps. A second fluid channel is formed between the outer surface of the gear and the inner surface of the heat exchanger for bringing the oil into heat transfer relationship with the first heat exchanger fluid through rotation of the gear(s).

Heat exchanger and system for warming and cooling a fluid circulating in a housing

A heat exchanger for an internal combustion engine includes a first flow channel; a second flow channel arranged adjacent to the first flow channel; a line separate from the second flow channel; and a valve channel in which an adjustable valve element is disposed. The valve channel is arranged upstream of the first and second flow channels and an inlet channel is arranged upstream of the valve channel in a flow direction of exhaust gas. The valve element includes a baffle plate, the baffle plate having an end portion that extends diagonally in the valve channel with respect to the flow axis of the first flow channel. The valve element includes a flap that is pivotably mounted at the end portion of the baffle plate such that the flap is pivotable about an axis that extends in a direction of a width of a common housing.

Heat exchanger for internal combustion engines

A heat exchanger structure for use in a battery unit that comprises a first battery stack comprising a plurality of battery cells and a second battery stack comprising a plurality of battery cells. The heat exchanger structure is disposed between opposing surfaces of the first battery stack and the second battery stack and defines one or more fluid flow passages, the heat exchanger structure being dimensionally compliant to compress under expansion of the first and second battery stacks and expand under subsequent contraction of the first and second battery stacks.

Conformal heat exchanger for battery cell stack

An annular heat exchanger for cooling hot gases comprises an inner shell, an intermediate shell and an outer shell. Where the heat exchanger is integrated with a catalytic converter for treatment of hot exhaust gases in a motor vehicle, the inner shell contains a catalyst for treatment of the exhaust gases. Inner and outer gas flow passages are provided between the shells, and a coolant flow passage is provided, either on the outer surface of the outer shell, or between the intermediate and outer shells. The exhaust gases change direction twice as they pass through the heat exchanger, and the annular structure of the heat exchanger provides a large surface area, and a large flow section, relative to volume, and thereby provides effective heat exchange without significantly increasing space requirements.

Annular heat exchanger

A manifold structure is defined by a pair of stacked plates which define a void: one of these plates has three or more aperture-surrounding bosses which project into the void; the other of these plates has a plurality of protuberances. Each of the protuberances engages between a respective pair of the bosses. A heat exchange element is formed of a plurality of stacked plates, these plates defining a stack of tubes. The tube stack interiorly defines a plurality of U-shaped passages, these passages being distinct from one another. Each tube defines a respective one of the U-shaped passages and is received in plug-fit relation by a respective one of the bosses. The tubes, bosses and protuberances separate the void into a pair of manifolds. Each of the U-shaped passages leads from one of the manifolds to the other of the manifolds.

U-flow stacked plate heat exchanger

A heat exchanger suitable for cooling exhaust gases and a method of making same are disclosed. The heat exchanger includes an outer casting member having first and second ends and forming a housing and a plurality of channel members forming alternating first and second flow channels for the flow of an exhaust gas through the first flow channels and coolant through the second flow channels. The channel members form a core having first and second ends, this core being mounted in the casting member. A first flange is fixedly attached to a first end of the core so as to form a sealed joint. A second flange is fixedly attached to the second end of the core so as to form another sealed joint. The first and second flanges are each coupled by fasteners to their respective ends of the casting.

Heat exchanger with cast housing and method of making the same

The invention relates to a heat exchanger (), in particular, for exhaust coolers on internal combustion engines. The aim of the invention is to provide a separation of the carrier medium flow into two partial flows as leak free as possible, by suitable embodiment of the baffle plate (). A heat exchanger (), as used, in particular, as exhaust gas cooler for internal combustion engines, comprises a heat exchanger channel () and a bypass channel (), whereby a switching flap () is arranged upstream of the heat exchanger () in the flow channel (), which divides the incoming carrier medium into the heat exchanger channel () and the bypass channel (). A baffle plate () is provided to maintain the separation between the partial flow through the bypass channel () and the partial flow through the heat exchanger channel (), which, according to the invention, extends from the switching flap () to the beginning of the bypass channel ().

Heat exchanger in particular for exhaust coolers on internal combustion engines

A valve apparatus can be used to select between a cold or a hot coolant for heat exchange, this selection depending on whether an attached heat exchanger is to operate as a cooler or a heater. The apparatus includes a valve housing with first and second chambers formed therein, first inlet and outlet ports for flow of a primary liquid into and out of the first chamber and further ports for flow of coolant at different temperatures through the second chamber. A linear actuator in the housing has a body containing wax and a plastic piston that is movable to an extended position by expansion of the wax. The actuator body is located in the first chamber so the temperature of the wax is dependent on the liquid's temperature in the first chamber. An end portion of the actuator adjacent to the second chamber is made of plastic. A valve mechanism for controlling coolant flow is operably connected to the piston and located in the second chamber. This mechanism includes a spool movable by the actuator.

Valve apparatus for regulating a heat exchange liquid

A heat exchanger with an external bypass is formed by a core portion including a plurality of stacked tubular members and a corrugated bypass tube positioned substantially parallel to the core portion. A first set of flow passages is defined within the tubular members for the flow of a first fluid therethrough, and a second set of flow passages is defined between adjacent tubular members as the tubular members are stacked together to form the core portion. A pair of external end plates is sealingly attached to transverse end wall portions of the stacked tubular members and to the ends of the bypass tube thereby forming the heat exchanger with an external bypass that comprises a single unit that can be brazed or joined together in a single operation.
