A tool (34, 144) is provided for extracting a contact (16, 112) from the front end of a connector, which not only has a sleeve (70) to release a locking clip (30) that holds the contact in position, but that also has a highly resilient grasping clip (80) that grasps the contact to pull it out when the tool is withdrawn from the connector. In a tool for a connector which has a barrel (29) lying within the locking clip and that has a smaller diameter location (32) forward of the barrel, the grasping clip (80) with spring fingers (86) lies in the sleeve at a position wherein the spring fingers can grasp the smaller diameter location of the contact to pull out the contact. A tool (144) for a contact (112) wherein the barrel (132) extends along the entire forward length of the contact but a front portion (170) of the barrel projects forward of the connector insulator, has a grasping clip (160) that lies in a sleeve part of greater bore diameter than the forward sleeve portion (142) that releases the locking clip from the contact.

Contact front extraction tool

A connector (10) that includes an insert (14) with contact-holding passages (16), is retained in a shell (12) by a pair of resilient sheet metal tines (30). The rear portion of the shell is provided with forwardly-facing shoulders (60) at the inside of the shell, and a pair of tines (30) are mounted on the insert. Each tine has a mount portion (40) fixed in the insert isolator (36), a first section (42) extending at a rearward (R) and outward (O) incline so the rear end (44) of the first section lies directly forward of the shoulder, and a second section (50) extending inwardly (I) from the rear end of the first section and having a tab (52) to enable inward deflection of the tine to release it from the shoulder. The tine generally lies in a cavity (46) at the rear of the insulator and at a side thereof, to enable a tool to be used to deflect the tab and release the insert.

Connector insert retention

An electrical connector backshell which is divided longitudinally into a pair of separable parts. The longitudinal edges of the two parts embody interlocking means allowing longitudinal sliding engagement of the parts, but preventing lateral separation of the parts even if one or both of the parts is flexed. The backshell housing may be formed from sheet metal. The two parts of the housing may be assembled over a cable after the conductors thereof have been connected to the contacts in a connector shell.

Electrical connector backshell

An electrical connector endbell in which the endbell housing is slotted so that the cable of the connector may be pushed laterally into the interior of the housing through the slot after the cable has been connected to the contacts in the connector shell. A cover is slidably removable on the endbell housing to close the slot. Screw threads are formed in the interior of the cover and the forward end of the housing for threading the endbell onto the rear of the connector shell.

Electrical connector endbell

A self-locking connector is disclosed in which locking of the mating halves of the connector is achieved near complete mating of the connector. The locking mechanism includes a resilient locking ring mounted behind the threads on the coupling nut of the plug connector member. The locking ring is formed with inwardly extending teeth which are engageable with recesses formed in the outer surface of the receptacle connector shell in front of the screw threads thereon.
