An organic electroluminescent device and a method of manufacturing such a device. By patterned exposure of an alkylatable-compound-containing organic layer of the device to an alkylating agent, a device is obtained which, in operation, exhibits patterned light emission, without it being necessary to structure the electrode layers. A salt is locally formed by means of alkylating in accordance with a pattern. If the salt contains ions which can move under the influence of an electric field, the threshold voltage necessary to produce light emission is reduced.

Organic electroluminescent device

An organic electroluminescent device (1) has an organic emitter layer (5) disposed between, on the one side, a common electrode (6) and, on the other side, a first and second electrode (3A, 3B) which are mutually interlaced and independently driveable. When driven by means of, respectively, the first and second electrode (3A, 3B), respectively, a first and second pattern-wise light-emitting surface emerges. Using different light-emitting patterns, optionally in combination with light-absorbing patterns, a group of icons differing in color and/or shape can be displayed selectively using the same part of a display area.

The invention relates to a stable aqueous dispersion of particles which can be flocculated by increasing the temperature to a value above the transition temperature. The invention is characterized in that the dispersion comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl methyl ether and a block copolymer of polyvinyl methyl ether and a polyvinyl ether, the ether group bonded to the main chain via the oxygen atom being adsorbed onto the surface of the particles. The invention also relates to a block polymer of the above-mentioned type and to a method of manufacturing such a block copolymer. The invention enables very fine powders of ceramic particles having a very high homogeneity to be obtained.

Aqueous dispersion of particles

A description is given of an electroluminescent device (1) having an LED structure, which is composed of an active layer (7) of oriented liquid-crystalline and electroluminescent compounds and a transparent positive electrode layer (5) which is preferably made from an electroconductive polymer. By previously rubbing the electrode layer (5) in one direction with a velvet cloth, an orientation is induced in the molecules in the active layer (7), the orientation being frozen by cooling or polymerization. The electroluminescent device (1) emits polarized light whose direction of polarization is parallel to the direction of rubbing.
