The invention relates to a use of a coating layer on a paper substrate for blocking oxygen transfer through the coated paper substrate, wherein the coating layer on the paper substrate is obtainable by a process, which comprises the steps of (a) providing a paper substrate with a surface, (b) applying onto the surface of the provided paper substrate an aqueous coating mass, and (c) drying of the paper substrate with the applied aqueous coating mass to obtain the coated paper substrate, wherein the aqueous coating mass contains an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer P, which is obtainable by radically initiated emulsion polymerization of at least 40 parts by weight of styrene and 22 to 49 parts by weight of butadiene and optionally other monomers based on the sum total of the parts by weight of all monomers, which is always 100, in the presence of a first degraded starch. It relates further to a coated paper substrate obtainable with a coating mass comprising the aqueous dispersion of the copolymer P and a further saccharide, which is added after the polymerization of the monomers. It relates also to a process for manufacturing the coated paper substrate obtainable with a coating mass comprising the aqueous dispersion of the copolymer P and the further saccharide.

Use of a coating layer with a styrene-butadiene copolymer on a paper substrate for blocking oxygen transfer

The invention relates to a use of a coating layer on a paper substrate for blocking oxygen transfer through the coated paper substrate, wherein the coating layer on the paper substrate is obtainable by a process, which comprises the steps of (a) providing a paper substrate with a surface, (b) applying onto the surface of the provided paper substrate an aqueous coating mass, and (c) drying of the paper substrate with the applied aqueous coating mass to obtain the coated paper substrate, wherein the aqueous coating mass contains an aqueous dispersion of a polymer P, which is obtainable by radically initiated emulsion polymerization of at least 25 parts by weight of a C-Calkyl acrylate or a C-Calkyl methacrylate based on the sum total of the parts by weight of all monomers, which is always 100, in the presence of a first degraded starch. It relates further to a coated paper substrate obtainable with a coating mass comprising the aqueous dispersion of the polymer P and a further saccharide, which is added after the polymerization of the monomers. It relates also to a process for manufacturing the coated paper substrate obtainable with a coating mass comprising the aqueous dispersion of the polymer P and the further saccharide.

Use of a coating layer with an acrylate polymer on a paper substrate for blocking oxygen transfer

Described is paper or cardboard packaging produced from mineral oil contaminated, (e.g., recycled) paper, wherein the packaging includes a barrier layer obtainable by applying an aqueous polymer dispersion comprising a copolymer obtainable by emulsion polymerization of C-Calkyl (meth)acrylates, acid monomers, e.g., acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, 0-20 wt % of acrylonitrile and 0 to 10 wt % of further monomers in an aqueous medium in the presence of a carbohydrate compound, preferably in the form of a degraded starch, wherein the glass transition temperature of the copolymer is in the range from +10 to +45&#xb0; C. The barrier layer may be situated on one of the surfaces of the packaging or form one of multiple layers of a multilayered packaging coating or be situated as a coating on one side of an inner bag situated within the packaging.

A paper coating slip additive obtainable by free-radical polymerization, its preparation and its use in paper coating compositions are described. The additive is formed from (a) acid monomers selected from ethylenically unsaturated C3 to C8 carboxylic acids, (b) associative monomers of the general formula HC&#x2550;CR&#x2014;COO-(EO)&#x2014;(PO)&#x2014;Rwhere Ris hydrogen or methyl, n is at least two, m is from zero to 50, EO is an ethylene oxide group, PO is a propylene oxide group and Ris a C8-C30 alkyl group or a C8-C30 alkaryl group, and (c) nonionic copolymerizable monomers other than a) and b), wherein said additive has a weight average molecular weight of below 200 000 and wherein tert-dodecyl mercaptan is used as chain transfer agent.

Paper or cardboard packaging produced from recycled paper contaminated by mineral oil, where the packaging includes a barrier layer obtained by applying an aqueous polymeric dispersion containing a mixture of at least two polymers A and B. Polymer A is obtained by emulsion polymerization of C1-C4 alkyl(meth)acrylates, acid monomers, e.g., acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, 0-20 wt % of acrylonitrile and 0-10 wt % of further monomers, where the glass transition temperature of copolymer A is greater than +45&#xb0; C. and the glass transition temperature of polymer B is less than +10&#xb0; C. The mean value calculated from the glass transition temperatures of the individual polymers is +10 to +45&#xb0; C. As associative thickener obtainable by free radical polymerization, the preparation thereof and the use thereof in paper coating slips are described. The associative thickener is formed from (a) acid monomers selected from ethylenically unsaturated C- to C-carboxylic acids, (b) associative monomers of the general formula HC&#x2550;CR&#x2014;COO-(EO)&#x2014;(PO)&#x2014;R, in which Ris hydrogen or methyl, n is a number of at least two, m is a number from zero to 50, EO is an ethylene oxide group, PO is a propylene oxide group and Ris a C-C-alkyl group or a C-C-alkaryl group, and (c) nonionic, copolymerizable monomers differing from a) and b), the reaction product having been reacted, after the polymerization, with initiators forming nonionic radicals.

The use of polyelectrolyte complexes is described, for providing an oxygen barrier to packaging materials made of polymer foils. Polymeric components of the polyelectrolyte complex are applied in polymerized form to the polymer foil. The polymer foil is either coated with an aqueous dispersion comprising a dispersed polyelectrolyte complex previously produced by water-in-water emulsion polymerization, or is coated with a composition comprising a polyelectrolyte complex produced from anionic polymer and from cationic surfactant, or the polymer foil is coated with at least three alternating layers, where respectively one of two adjacent layers comprises an anionic polyelectrolyte component and the other of two adjacent layers comprises a cationic polyelectrolyte component, and polyelectrolyte complexes form at the opposite, adjacent interfaces of the alternating layers.

A description is given of a method of producing packaging, the packaging surface being coated with a polyelectrolyte complex, and the polyelectrolyte complex being composed of at least one first polymer and at least one second polymer, the first polymer being an anionic polymer and the second polymer being a cationic polymer. The packaging is distinguished by good fat barrier properties.
