The present invention relates to an interfacial process for the production of polycarbonates having terminal, aliphatically bonded hydroxyl groups by reacting predominantly dihydric alcohols with phosgene or chlorocarbonic acid esters of predominantly dihydric alcohols and/or phenols using alkali liquors as HCl-binding agents and in the presence of inert solvents, the process according to the invention being distinguished by the fact that concentrated, aqueous alkali liquors are used as the HCl-binding agents and thiodiglycol, optionally mixed with additional monohydric and polyhydric alcohols, is used as the dihydric alcohol. The present invention further relates to the new polycarbonates produced according to the novel process and to the use of these new polycarbonates for the production of polyurethane plastics.

Thiodiglycol polycarbonates

Thermoplastic moulding compositions of 1. 70 - 20 % by weight of graft polycarbonates whose graft stock is a vinyl polymer with a molecular weight of from 10,000 to 100,000, containing from 3 to 10 side chains attached by carbon, each of which contains a hydroxyphenyl group, on which aromatic polycarbonate chains are condensed, and 2. 30 - 80 % by weight of graft polymer rubbers obtained by polymerizing a mixture of 2.1. 50 - 90 % by weight styrene, .alpha.-methylstyrene, methylmethacrylate or mixtures thereof, and 2.2. 10 - 50 % by weight acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methylmethacrylate or mixtures thereof on a diene or acrylate rubber.

Moulding compositions of graft polycarbonate and graft polymer rubbers

A continuous process for the preparation of a bisphenol bischlorocarbonic acid ester, wherein a hydroquinone or a bisphenol dissolved in excess alkali metal hydroxide solution is reacted with 2.5 to 5.0 mol of phosgene (per mol of the dihydroxy compound) which is dissolved in a suitable solvent for the bischlorocarbonic acid ester formed in the reaction at a pH value of at least 12 and a temperature of 0.degree. to 50.degree.C under vigorous mixing of the reactants and unidirectional flow conditions and the organic layer thus obtained is separated wherefrom the bisphenol bischlorocarbonic acid ester is isolated by distillation and/or crystallization.
