Additives for lubricants

The present invention relates to a composition containing a lubricant or hydraulic fluid and in an effective amount to improve extreme pressure and anti-wear properties of said lubricant or hydraulic fluid of at least one compound of the formula II ##STR1## R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 together with the C atom to which they are bound are tert-C.sub.4 -C.sub.14 -alkyl. R.sup.4 is phenyl, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --NH.sub.2, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH, --CH.sub.2 CH(OH)--CH.sub.2 --OH, tert-C.sub.4 -C.sub.14 alkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --S--CH(OH)--CH.sub.2 --S-(tert-C.sub.8 -C.sub.12 alkyl), --CH.sub.2 --COOH, --CH.sub.2 --COO--(i-C.sub.8 H.sub.17), --CH.sub.2 --CO--OH.H.sub.2 N-(tert-C.sub.10 -C.sub.16 -alkyl), --P(S)--[O--(i-C.sub.3 H.sub.7)].sub.2, --P(S)--[O--(i-C.sub.8 H.sub.17)].sub.2, .alpha.-naphthyl, benzothiazolyl, benzimidazolyl, thiazolyl, --CH.sub.2 --CH--(OH)--CH.sub.2 --S--R.sup.10 wherein R.sup.10 is tertiary C.sub.4 -C.sub.14 -alkyl, or R.sup.4 is radical ##STR2## R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 have the meaning defined above and R.sup.11 is --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --, o-phenylene, thiadiazol-2,5-ylene or --(CH.sub.2).sub.u --, u being zero to 2.

Compounds of the general formula I ##STR1## in which n is 1, 2 or 3 and in which X is oxygen or sulfur, T has the meaning of --S--, --S--S--, --S--S--, --S--S--S--S--, --S--S--S--S--S--, ##STR2## and Y has the meaning of ##STR3## in which Z has the meaning of --H, --COR.sup.13, --COOR.sup.13 or --CONHR.sup.13, and Q has the meaning of oxygen or --NR.sup.0 --, and R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.0, R.sup.4 and R.sup.13 are as defined in claim 1, with the proviso that the compound of the formula C.sub.2 H.sub.5 --S--CH.sub.2 CH(OH)--P(OC.sub.2 H.sub.5).sub.2 is excepted. The invention also relates to compositions containing the compounds of the formula I and organic materials, for example functional liquids and, in particular, lubricants.

Chlorine-containing polymers can be stabilized against thermal and actinic degradation by addition of a) a sterically hindered amine, b) a zinc compound, c) a calcium, magnesium and/or barium compound, and d) a 1,3-dicarbonyl compound. Other additives such as phosphites or epoxides can further improve the stabilization.

The compounds of the formula IA ##STR2## in which R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 hydroxyalkyl, phenyl, hydroxyphenyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.10 phenylalkyl or C.sub.7 -C.sub.10 phenylalkyl which is substituted on the phenyl ring by an OH group, are novel.
