The invention relates to relatively light and thermally stable granulated, fermentation-broth-based animal feed additives having a high content of L-lysine and to low-loss methods for their production from broths obtained by fermentation.

Highly concentrated aqueous L-Tryptophan and/or L-Threonine salt solutions are used to supplement mixed feeds with L-Tryptophan and/or L-Threonine. They can be metered easily and accurately, can be produced in a highly concentrated form with a content of between 30 and 70% and are storage stable to a surprisingly high degree (slight tendency to crystallize, no chemical decomposition, no racemization) even over a relatively long period of at least three months when outside temperatures are low.

Use of aqueous L-Tryptophan and/or L-Threonine salt solutions

A process is disclosed for the fermentative preparation of amino acids, in which an L-lysine producing bacterial strain of the species Corynebacterium glutamicum is cultivated in a nutrient medium and the amino acids can be isolated from the culture medium at the end of fermentation. After the vigorous growth phase, the bacterial culture has at its disposal a smaller quantity of assimilable carbon source than it could metabolize on the basis of the structure of the strain and the quanitity of other necessary supplements provided in the nutrient medium.

Fermentative preparation of amino acids

A process is disclosed for the fermentative preparation of amino acids, in which a strain of the genus Brevibacterium or Corynebacterium producing one or more amino acids is cultivated in a nutrient medium and the amino acids are isolated from the culture fluid at the end of fermentation. After the vigorous growth phase, the bacterial culture has at its disposal a smaller quantity of assimilable carbon source than it could metabolize on the basis of the structure of the strain and the quantity of other necessary supplements provided in the nutrient medium.

An animal feed additive comprising stable pellets is produced by pelletizing from a fermentation broth containing an animal feed additive with at least 33% by weight of the fermentation products present. The pellets can be produced particularly effectively by pelletizing providing they are built up from at least 30% by weight of fine particles of which at least 70% by weight are smaller than 100 .mu.m in size. An animal feed supplement and processes for its production which provide an inexpensive, not excessively hygroscopic or sticky supplement amino acid whose content should be standardizable. The animal feed supplement is based on a fermentation broth and contains the predominant proportion of its contents, optionally with the exclusion of part of the biomass. The biomass is preferably present in an amount of at most 10% by weight in the dry state. Proteins are preferably present in a maximum amount of 10% by weight. For the production, the sugar content is adjusted to a maximum of 4 g/l during fermentation, at least towards the end thereof, and at least part of the biomass is optionally removed during the working up.
