A variable valve control arrangement for a lift valve of an internal combustion engine has a longitudinally adjustable coupling assembly disposed between a cam and the lift valve including an outer cup plunger and an inner plunger on the lift valve side and a hydraulic working space formed between the plungers. During the flanks of the valve lift curve, communication is established at times between the hydraulic working space and a pressure medium supply through the cup plunger so that at sufficiently high pressure the coupling assembly will increase its length. During the valve closing phase, the pressure in the working space is reduced through a throttle aperture in the cup plunger.

A force-transmitting arrangement to effect opening of a lift valve includes a central plunger responsive to the action of a main cam and a valve-engaging piston enclosing a pressure chamber. In addition, another pressure chamber surrounding the plunger and within a displaceable cup plunger communicates with a pressure medium line having a control valve. The cup plunger is responsive to an additional cam having a different lift curve from the main cam. When the control valve is closed, the lift curve of the additional cam is transmitted to the lift valve by way of both pressure chambers. When the control valve is open, the lift curve of the main cam is transmitted to the lift valve.

In the embodiment described in the specification a combustion chamber for an internal combustion engine has intake and exhaust valves arranged to scavenge the combustion chamber with fresh gas. The valve control for the intake valve is arranged so that the intake valve closing time is delayed with decreasing load and, to avoid a corresponding reduction of the compression ratio, the combustion chamber has a variable volume annex which reduces the combustion chamber volume with decreasing load.

In order to produce a rotary valve with short and small cross-sectional dimensions, fresh gas or exhaust gas ducts of the rotary valve are associated with adjacent cylinders and extend in some regions in a common cross-sectional plane, in different halves of the cross section of the rotary valve outside the longitudinal axis thereof, the plane also contains two diametrically opposite fresh gas and, respectively, exhaust gas openings in the rotary valve housing.

A valve operating mechanism for an internal combustion engine for an automobile in which friction is decreased without an increase in the mass to be moved by the valve closing spring. The valve operating mechanism has a roller arranged on an actuation spindle. The roller cooperates with a bearing surface on a component of the mechanism that is connected to the valve, at least during valve opening, so that deviations of the valve lift curve from the desired valve lift curve are eliminated. Connection between the actuation spindle, through the roller, and the valve is maintained only during the valve-open cycle.

An internal-combustion engine includes an oil reservoir, a lubricating oil circuit, a lubricating oil pump drawing oil from the oil reservoir and driving the oil in the lubricating oil circuit and a cooling oil circuit coupled to the lubricating oil circuit. There is further provided a cooling oil pump drawing oil from the oil reservoir and driving the oil in the cooling oil circuit. The cooling oil pump has a lower output pressure than the lubricating oil pump.
