A printer for a plurality of different printing objects serving as a multifunctional printer is subject to problems of economic production. A printer system which allows to process all internationally required forms and savings booklets, records, checks, protocols, driver licenses for motor vehicles, passports, identification cards, motor vehicle registration papers, picture-text BTX texts, and teletext texts, can be furnished, depending on the selected functions, by forming a base model (1), which includes a print apparatus (2), a print-object transport device (3), an operating field (4), an electronic control device (5), and a power supply (6), where the print apparatus (2), the power supply (6), and the electronic control device (5) form in each case modular building blocks (7), which can be easily mounted and easily demounted by receiving and bolting means (8, 10 or, respectively, 9a, 10a) disposed at a base frame (8) and where further receiving and bolting means (9, 10 or, respectively, 9b, 10b) are provided at the base frame ( 8) for an optical character-recognition device (15) and/or for a magnetic-strip processing (20) and/or for an optical line searcher (21) and/or for an optical marking searching (22) and/or for a journal-printer modular building block (23, 7).

A flat substrate (3) for surface structure is insertable, in each case, in positions where the processing means (5) are moved into positions outside of the path of the substrate, in particular for print and/or read means (6, 7) in a device for the transport of flat substrates (3) in office machines, in particular for records in record-processing apparatus (1). A pull-in shaft (8) or feed throat includes guide means which form, in transport direction (4), one or several successive, cross-running openings (19) for the processing means (5) movable cross to the transport direction (4). The openings (19) are closable, at least in part, by way of elastic coverings (24, 25) for achieving an interference-free pull-in of damaged and/or irregular substrates (3) or, respectively, records. The coverings (24, 25) form in transport direction (4), in each case, insert funnels (26) for the substrate (3) and, in case of cross motions of the processing means (5), the respective elastic covering (24, 25) is movable by the moved processing means (5) from the functioning position, assumed in the initial state during the moving by of the processing means (5), temporarily into another functioning position.

Device including an elastic covering for transporting record substrates

A perforated form band is introduced into a form printer through an input passage or shaft. The passage is formed by spaced walls and is pivotally mounted on the printer for movement between an input position and a working position. In the input position, a form band is introduced into and aligned within the input passage. In one embodiment, the leading end of the form band contacts transversely extending stop surfaces, while in another the leading end of the form band is aligned with an indicating mark and the perforations on the form band engage with projections in the input passage. With the form band aligned, the input passage is moved into the working position engaging the perforations in the form band on pins projecting outwardly from sprocket wheels which drive the form band through the printer. In the working position of the input passage, the form band no longer contacts the stop surfaces or engages the projections used in the aligning operation.
