The invention relates to an internal combustion engine having a turbocompound system. The turbocompound system encompasses an exhaust-gas turbocharger, a turbo intercooler, and a power turbine. The power turbine is connectable, via a transmission with clutch, to the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine. A connectable compressor, which is couplable either to the power turbine or to the internal combustion engine, is received in a multiple-flow intake pipe.

An exhaust gas turbocharger with a variable turbine geometry can be adjusted in the fired engine operation by an automatic turbine controller to a definable desired supercharging pressure in the intake port. In the braking operation, the turbocharger can be adjusted by an engine braking system with an automatic braking controller as a function of operating parameters of the internal-combustion engine into a ram position which increases the pressure in the exhaust gas system. A change-over element is provided for the change-over between the engine braking system and the automatic turbine controller. To make the exhaust gas turbocharger variable, the automatic turbine controller and the engine braking system each have a modular design and a separate construction. A manual braking signal to the engine braking system, can be generated in a manually adjustable brake operating device. A change-over element is provided for changing over between the automatic braking controller and the brake operating device.

Exhaust gas turbocharger with a variable turbine geometry

A method for controlling a variable turbine geometry of an exhaust gas turbocharger which supercharges an internal combustion engine for driving a motor vehicle. The turbine geometry is set as a function of the operating load of the internal combustion engine between the opening position in idling and the closed position in full load operation. The turbine geometry is brought into an operating position predetermined for the prevailing load point. To improve the non-steady-state operating performance of the exhaust gas turbocharger and the internal combustion engine, in particular during long acceleration phases of the motor vehicle, the turbine geometry is guided during a switching pause for changing gear levels of the motor vehicle into a switching pause position which is independent of the operating load. In the switching pause position a reduced flow cross section of the turbine for the exhaust gas stream is set. This prevents a drop in supercharger rotation speed during the switching pause and the related delay in buildup of the torque and boost pressure of the internal combustion engine.

In a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine with solenoid valve controlled fuel injection nozzles receiving fuel from a common high pressure fuel supply line to which fuel is supplied via a high-pressure line including a check valve by a mechanically operated high pressure piston pump which has a piston disposed in a cylinder to which fuel is fed by a low pressure fuel supply line, a control line extends between the high-pressure line upstream of the check valve and the fuel supply line and includes a solenoid valve to permit fuel discharge from the pump back to the fuel supply line and a bypass line extends between the high-pressure line downstream of the check valve and the cylinder to provide communication with the fuel supply line through passages in the piston and the working space of the piston when the piston is in its inserted position and the solenoid is open to permit the release of pressurized fuel from the common high-pressure fuel supply line to the low pressure fuel supply line.

In a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine having a high-pressure pump supplying fuel from a low pressure fuel supply conduit connected to the pump to a common high pressure fuel supply conduit for the injectors of the internal combustion engine via a high-pressure conduit extending between the high pressure pump and the common fuel supply conduit, the high-pressure conduit includes a non-return valve which, at the same time, is operable electromagnetically so as to be capable of maintaining the non-return valve open beyond the high-pressure pump delivery stroke for the release of fuel from the common fuel supply conduit under the control of the pump plunger and for rapid pressure relief by keeping the non-return valve open beyond a point at which the plunger opens the low-pressure fuel supply conduit connected to the pump.

The invention concerns a supercharged internal combustion engine in which two inlet ducts, which can be closed by inlet valves and whose flows are separated from one another, and two exhaust ducts which can be closed by exhaust valves enter the combustion space of a cylinder, one inlet duct and one exhaust duct being associated with one exhaust gas turbocharger. In order to achieve both a rapid build-up of supercharge pressure in the case of positive load changes and also an optimum homogenization of the mixture in the combustion space, the two exhaust ducts are also arranged so that their flows are separated and the inlet and exhaust side connected to the same exhaust gas turbocharger can be closed by one shut-off element each.

A process for the load-dependent control of a hydraulic drive for a compressor arranged at an internal-combustion engine, the compressor being driven by a hydraulic motor that, in turn, is acted upon by pressure from a hydraulic pump, the internal-combustion engine itself driving the hydraulic pump. In order to ensure a relatively high compressor speed as early as during the idling operation of the internal-combustion engine, and have available an optimal torque for a positive load change, while keeping minimal the additional fuel consumption required for the hydraulic drive, during the idling operation of the internal-combustion engine, the hydraulic pump is adjusted into the full-delivery position and the hydraulic motor is adjusted into the minimum intake position. Upon a subsequent positive load change, after an indicated hydraulic motor control pressure is reached, the hydraulic motor is guided into the maximum intake position, and after an indicated hydraulic pump control pressure is reached, the hydraulic pump is guided into the direction of the minimum delivery position. After an indicated charging pressure limit is reached, the hydraulic drive is disconnected from the compressor. Also described is an arrangement for carrying out this process.

An arrangement for influencing a cooling air flow passing through a cooling air system of an internal-combustion engine of a vehicle includes a heat exchanger and a blower arranged in an air guiding housing, a cooling air outlet opening being arranged in the air guiding housing between the blower and a wall of an internal-combustion engine capsule in the area of the bottom side of the vehicle. In order to achieve a better efficiency of the blower and in order to prevent the emission of sounds from the ventilated capsule, pivotable guide blades are arranged in flow direction in front of and/or behind the running blades of the blower which, as a function of thir position, closes the cooling air inlet opening to the capsule and opens the cooling air outlet opening arranged in the air guiding space between the heat exchanger and the blower.
