In a cutting mechanism (1), the cutting blade (2) is clamped against the blade support (3) by cam-like clamping members (25) arranged on a common actuating shaft (22). The clamping members (25) can be jointly adjusted by means of an actuating member (33) positioned in readily accessible manner on the front outside (30) of the cutting mechanism (1). In the vicinity of the other end, a longitudinal stop (40) for cutting blade (2) is provided, while on the end of the cutting blade (2) located at actuating member (3) is provided a mounting support (41) for a handle. Thus, even in the case of cutting mechanisms (1) closely juxtaposed in a cutting station, the cutting blade (2) can be replaced and realigned in a very short time.

Cutting apparatus for sheet material, like paper

In the apparatus for binding stacks (31) of zig-zag-folded layers (40) a folder (10) is followed by a stacking device (43), which has a lifting table (14). In stacking area (41) following folder (10) is provided a separating device (24) in the form of a rake with front separating heads (100), which can be provided with blast air nozzles. A straightening device (22a) is used for periodically compressing the folded edge (82a) and the folder is preceded by a cutting mechanism (110) for making cuts on the folded edges (82a) to be separated, so that the separating devices (24) are not required to operate at areas on the edges provided with conveying holes.

Apparatus for folding and cutting web stacks

Zig-zag folded layers of paper webs are stacked downstream of a folder on a lifting table. A belt is raised to hold a nearly completed stack from below and a separating rake with leading spear shaped heads is moved into the stack at a division between sheets, and severs the stack along a fold. The lifting table and separating rake are shifted together as the separating rake advances, during which the stack to be removed is supported on the raised belt. A new partial stack accumulates on the separating rake while the old stack is removed, the belt is lowered and the table is raised. The table and rake are then returned to their original position to resume stacking on the table. Shifting of the table and separating means, and movement of the raised belt, are driven from a common drive by means of a controllable freewheel clutch engaging over a part of the cycle.

Apparatus for forming folded stacks from a web

The device forms a pile with bindings projecting alternately on both sides from a pile core. In one embodiment, the blocks are guided in on a table transporter which can be led horizontally above a pile shaft to bring the block against a front support device constructed as a magnetic bar. With a forwardly lying ferromagnetic binding the magnetic bar holds this firmly while a block with a rear lying binding is again taken up and laid against a rear support device. The blocks are thrown down on to the pile by simultaneous releasing of the front and rear edges and guide themselves as they drop by means of the magnetic bars.

Piling device for bound sets of sheets

Overlapped sheets are conveyed against a stop to form piles, a plurality of the stops being provided on a starwheel. The leading edge of each forming pile is carried by carrier fingers operatively associated with the stops, most of the pile being carried over the actual pile table by a support element, which projects in ramp-like sloping manner through the table plane. The pile can be removed by a gripper after lowering the support element, while a new pile forms on a carrier finger swung in by rotation of the starwheel.

An apparatus for depositing sheets in a stack. The advancing edges of the sheets are brought to a halt by abutting stops. Hold down devices located in the region of the stops restrict the rising up of the advancing edges of the sheets against the stops. The hold down devices comprise rough or adhering surfaces on the stops and/or flexible and/or pivotal elements arranged above and extending obliquely over the stack in the direction of sheet advance.

Apparatus for depositing sheets in a stack

An apparatus is provided for placing end sheets or the like under a stack of sheets. The apparatus has a conveying arrangement for conveying the stacked layers of sheets and a feed arrangement for the end sheets. The feed arrangement is designed to place the end sheets at least partially on to the conveying arrangement. A lifting arrangement for lifting the layers of sheets being conveyed on the conveying arrangement is provided upstream of the position at which the end sheets are placed on the conveying arrangement.

Apparatus for placing terminal sheets or the like on to layers of sheets

A pad is made by inserting a comb through a row of holes along the spine of the pad, which has been assembled with a relatively stiff backing leaf overlying a cover leaf and curving the comb teeth over to form a closure joint between the ends of the teeth and the back of the comb. The binding apparatus includes a turn-over device for turning over the stiff backing leaf so that the latter now underlies the pad with the closure joint lying between the penultimate (or last normal) leaf of the pad and the now underlying backing leaf.

Pads

The present specification describes and claims a device for severing a strip which interconnects items conveyed one behind the other and spaced apart from each other. The device is particularly suited to cutting the binding strip for the spine of books, blocks etc. The device comprises a knife mechanically coupled to a follower device which, in use, follows the profile of the individual items. The follower device maintains the knife in a position ready to cut and when the follower device drops down a gap between adjacent items, the movement of the knife activates control means to operate a knife power drive, the knife then cutting the strip and following a working cycle back to a ready position wherein the follower device can engage a subsequent item.

A device for spreading glue on articles such as the abutting ends of stacks of sheet paper or book backs, comprising a rotatable glue-spreading roller which projects from above into a glue supply in a glue tank and is wetted with glue, wipers arranged to act on the surface of the roller in the regions where the roller enters and leaves the glue tank and a level regulating device for maintaining a desired glue level in the glue tank.
