The invention proposes that a casting mold be provided with a lining for the manufacture of a crystal body. The lining is removed from the casting mold together with the crystal body that has solidified in the lining and the lining serves as a protective cap for the crystal body. Additional functional layers for the protective cap or the scintillator plate can be integrated into the lining.

A multi-shelled melt container is disclosed for liquefying and crystallizing substances which comprises at least an inner shell and a bearing shell. While the inner shell--which has a thin wall in comparison to the wall of the bearing shell--consists of an inert material with respect to the melt, the bearing shell serves exclusively to fixate and support the inner shell and is correspondingly constructed in a mechanically stable fashion. A phosphor for a high energy radiation detector is formed by a rare earth oxisulfide having the general sum formula (M.sub.1-x Ln.sub.x).sub.2 O.sub.2 S, wherein M is at least one element of the group Y, La and Gd, Ln stands for at least one element of the group Eu, Ce, Pr, Tb, Yb, Dy, Sm and Ho, and whereby (2.times.10.sup.-1).gtoreq..times..gtoreq.(1.times.10.sup.-6), which also contains molybdenum in a proportion between 10.sup.-1 and 10.sup.-6 mol percent for reducing the afterglow of the phosphor.
