A fiber comprises a core, a sheath, and an additive that determines a desired physico-chemical parameter of the fiber, wherein the fiber is spun such that without increasing the concentration of the additive the desired parameter increases when the volume of the sheath decreases. Especially preferred additives include chromophores (e.g., a UV absorbing agent), flame-retardants, and adhesion promoters.

High-strength thin sheath fibers

A polymeric sheet having excellent cut-resistance contains: (A) a polymeric material, and (B) a hard filler distributed in the polymeric material, the hard filler having a Mohs hardness value of at least about 3.0, the hard filler being in the form of particles having an average diameter sufficient to provide cut-resistance properties to the polymeric material but which is no more than about 5 microns. The cut-resistant sheet may be in the form of a conventional sheet, a film, a coating, a composite and the like, and may be used to form cut-resistance articles such as, e.g., protective garments and tires. The cut-resistant sheet may also be laminated onto a textile fabric to form a composite from which articles, e.g., garments, can be formed.

An antistatic bicomponent fiber comprises a nonconductive first component made of a first polymer and a conductive second component made of a second polymer containing a conductive material, where the second polymer has a lower melting point than the first polymer. The bicomponent fiber is made by co-extruding the two polymers at a temperature above their melting points, stretching the extruded fiber to increase the tensile strength, and heat treating the fiber at a temperature between the melting point of the first polymer and the melting point of the second polymer to improve the conductivity of the conductive second component. The bicomponent fiber is preferably a sheath/core fiber.

A fiber having increased cut resistance is made from a fiber-forming polymer and a hard filler having a Mohs Hardness Value greater than about 3. The filler is included in an amount of about 0.05% to about 20% by weight. In preferred embodiments, the fiber-forming polymer is poly(ethylene terephthalate) or a liquid crystalline polyester comprising monomer units derived from 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. Preferred fillers include tungsten and alumina.

A sheath/core fiber having increased cut resistance includes a core made from a fiber-forming polymer and a hard filler having a Mohs Hardness Value greater than about 3. The filler is included in an amount of about 0.05% to about 20% by weight. The fiber-forming polymer of both the sheath and the core components includes an aromatic polyamide polymer.

Method of making a cut-resistant fiber and fabrics, and the fabric made

A knitting machine part which is resistant to abrasion caused by knitting a yarn of cut-resistant fiber contains: (i) a base substrate having at least one yarn-contacting region for contacting the yarn during the knitting process, and (ii) a coating disposed on the surface of the base substrate on at least the yarn-contacting region of the base substrate, wherein the coating contains titanium carbonitride having a carbon-to-nitrogen weight ratio of from about 1:4 to 4:1, preferably from about 1:1.5 to 1.5:1, most preferably about 1:1. The knitting machine part is preferably a knitting needle or a sinker. The cut-resistant yarn is preferably composed of at least one cut-resistant fiber formed from a fiber-forming polymer and a hard filler having a Mohs Hardness value of at least about 3, the hard filler being distributed in the fiber-forming polymer. The coated knitting machine part may also be used to knit conventional fibers and yarns, for example, fibers and yarns which are not cut-resistant, including abrasive fibers which are not cut-resistant.

Filled cut-resistant fiber

A polymeric article having improved cut-resistance is composed of (A) an initial polymeric article having cut-resistant properties; and (B) a cut-resistant elastomeric coating disposed on an outer surface of the initial polymeric article, wherein the elastomeric coating is composed of an elastomer and a hard filler distributed in the elastomer. The hard filler has a Mohs Hardness value of at least about 3. The final polymeric article has improved cut-resistance, improved flexibility, and improved comfort and will retain its properties when routinely laundered. The article is preferably in the form of a polymeric textile article, more preferably in the form of an elastomeric protective garment, and most preferably in the form of gloves, e.g., surgical gloves.
