A system and method for performing assortment definition is provided. The method comprises inputting information regarding a plurality of stores into an assortment definition engine, and performing a matching process to identify at least one group of stores for assignment to the assortment. An automated system for defining an assortment and a program product for defining an assortment are also provided.

A method for planning an assortment including a store comprises receiving a hierarchical list of articles including a plurality of nodes, and assigning a first node in the hierarchical list to the store to define a first group of articles that are assignable to the assortment. A layout module version is defined that represents a product layout for the group of stores for a time period based on the corresponding assortment version. The layout module information is provided to a shelf optimization or ranging program. A system, method and computer readable medium are provided for performing assortment definitions. The method includes receiving category information regarding a plurality of stores, receiving category information regarding the one or more assortments, identifying the dimensions of the categories of information regarding the one or more assortments, identifying the dimensions of the category information regarding a plurality of stores classifying the assortment by a first dimension, receiving information regarding a plurality of stores, classifying each of the plurality of stores according to the received values of the dimensions and receiving a classification of each of the one or more assortments and assigning each of the plurality of the stores to one or more of the one or more assortments having the same classification.
