A catalyst for the hydrogenation of unsaturated aliphatic compounds having a content of 20-70% w/w of nickel oxide, 25-45% w/w of zirconium oxide and 5-40% w/w of copper oxide, based on the oxidic, unreduced catalyst.

A process for the preparation of saturated alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation of acetylenic alcohols at a temperature of from 50.degree. to 200.degree. C. and under a pressure of from 30 to 320 bar, wherein the catalyst used has a content of from 20 to 75% of nickel oxide, from 10 to 75% of zirconium dioxide and from 5 to 50% of copper oxide, by weight of the oxidic, unreduced catalyst.

A process for the preparation of alkanediols by hydrogenation of alkynediols of from 3 to 8 carbon atoms in which a solution of the alkynediol in an alcohol of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, the mass fraction of alkynediol being more than 5%, of water at most 10%, and of alkanediol from 20% to 85%, is hydrogenated at temperatures of 110.degree. C. to 240.degree. C. and pressures greater than 10 bar, the pH being greater than 6.

A process for the manufacture of secondary amines, especially fatty amines, from alcohols and ammonia over a hydrogenating catalyst in the presence of hydrogen, in which the reaction mixture essentially consists of alcohol and the amine formed, with only little ammonia, the latter being added progressively and the water formed in the reaction being removed progressively.

N-Alkylanilines are obtained by alkylating anilines with alcohols in the absence of hydrogen under a pressure substantially higher than the autogenous pressure of the reaction mixture, at from 50.degree. to 250.degree. C., preferably in the presence of a fixed catalyst containing cobalt, nickel and copper.

An improved method of preparing amines by reaction of alcohols with ammonia or primary or secondary amines at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst containing cobalt, nickel and copper, the improvement comprising using a catalyst which contains (calculated on the metal content of the catalyst) from 70 to 95% by weight of a mixture of cobalt and nickel and from 5 to 30% by weight of copper, the ratio by weight of cobalt to nickel being from 4:1 to 1:4. The amines prepared in this way are suitable for the production of emulsifying agents, plant protection agents and vulcanization accelerators.
