A wearable electronic device for conveying information in an analog manner at least in part by the use of at least one display hand positioned on the dial side of a dial, wherein the wearable electronic device uses the display hand(s) to convey information that is stored in the controller of the device and/or provided by sensors and/or an external transmitter. An actuation mechanism, preferably a stepper motor, is used to rotate the display hands in the clockwise and/or counterclockwise directions in predefined increments to convey the information.

An electronic device that includes functionality to perform at least two functions, a first of which may be timekeeping and the other of which is at least a function other than the first function. The electronic device comprises a multilayered module comprising a frame having a frame surface; at least two physically separable printed circuit boards, the first of which includes means related to at least the timekeeping and the second of which includes means related to at least the function other than timekeeping, wherein the first printed circuit board is intermediate the frame surface and the second printed circuit board; a battery compartment dimensioned for receiving a battery, wherein the battery compartment is asymmetrically positioned within the module thus creating a region above the first printed circuit board and proximate the battery compartment; and wherein the second printed circuit board is securable within the module and in the region; wherein the functionality of the electronic device can be changed and/or modified by a removal of the second printed circuit board and a replacement with another printed circuit board having means at least in part different from and/or in addition to the means of the second printed circuit board; whereby the first printed circuit board need not be removed to provide for such additional and/or different functionality provided by the replacement printed circuit board.

Date display assembly for a timepiece

An improved illuminated watch movement with analog and digital features comprising a frame containing an analog stepping motor and gear train connected to operate timepiece hands located substantially in the center of the movement. The frame has a recess on the dial side of the frame with a liquid crystal display disposed in the recess and having an indicia pattern. The liquid crystal display has a large available surface which covers the lower half of the movement up to the hour wheel, so that a variety of indicia patterns may be displayed. An electroluminescent lamp is disposed beneath said liquid crystal display. An electroluminescent dial is disposed on the dial side of the frame and has a window opening framing the indicia pattern. A circuit with actuators is connected to actuate the electroluminescent lamp and/or the electroluminescent dial. The movement further includes a printed circuit board disposed on the opposite side of the frame from the dial and having contact pads. Yieldable electrical connectors such as spring metal or conductive elastomeric members extend across the frame between the contact pads and the electroluminescent dial and lamp. The movement is adapted to fit a variety of dial shapes with window openings for framing a variety of indicia patterns without significant physical alterations.

A multifunctional holding plate for use in an analog wristwatch movement with a calendar date ring, a day of the week disc, an engageable time setting pinion and various gear members. The multifunctional holding plate is attached to the movement frame and has (1) retaining fingers to hold the gear members and date ring in place, (2) a flexible detenting spring leg to detent the date ring, (3) a flexible retaining leg to facilitate engagement of the timesetting pinion, and (4) a flexible detenting spring leg to detent the day disc.

An improved movement for an analog wristwatch of the type having a plastic frame with a peripheral wall surrounding a central wall. The central wall carries gear trains on the dial side and movement side of the wall and a stepping motor driving the gear trains to drive the watch hands. An annular printed circuit board carries discrete electronic components disposed on one side and electrically connected thereto. The peripheral wall of the frame includes coplanar mounting surfaces arranged to support the PCB and has discrete recesses surrounding the central wall which receive the discrete electronic components when the annular PCB is so supported. An annular conductive spring plate disposed on the annular PCB performs various switching functions. The spring plate and the printed circuit board are held down against the coplanar mounting surfaces, and a thin, large diameter lithium energy cell fits inside the annular members.

Analog timepiece movement

Analog timepiece movement adapted for a large diameter, thin energy cell, the movement comprising a molded frame of insulating material having a top central wall, and having depending peripheral side wall portions. A flat bridge of insulating material divides the movement into an inner cavity. A stepping motor and gear train are disposed in the inner cavity and a quartz crystal is disposed outside of the cavity. One of the wheel assemblies is of non-magnetic material and extends through a hole in by the stepping motor stator. The peripheral wall portions and the bridge together define a circular envelope in the outer cavity adapted to locate and contain said energy cell. The movement is substantially elliptical in shape, the ellipse having a minor axis slightly greater than that of the energy cell, and the quartz crystal is disposed on one end of the elliptical frame alongside the energy cell.

A movement subassembly adapted for use in either a two hand timepiece or a three hand timepiece, the subassembly having a first set of elements common to both timepieces adapted to cooperate with a second set of components, including at least one intermediate wheel assembly to make up a three hand timepiece movement, the first set also adapted to cooperate with a third set of components, using a different wheel assembly to make a two hand timepiece. The second set components includes a seconds wheel assembly, an intermediate wheel assembly, a third wheel assembly and a once-per-second pulsing integrated circuit. The subassembly frame includes bearings for journaling all of said aforementioned wheel assemblies using a common subassembly.

A central passage in the journals has a constricted section therein with a diameter slightly less than that of said larger diameter of said frustum portion on said metal pinion member with the frustum disposed in said constricted passage with a snap fit, whereby a friction drive/slip coupling is provided between the metal frustum portion of the metal pinion member and the constricted passage of the plastic wheel member.

An improved setting mechanism for a timepiece of a known type having a frame, a gear train, a detented setting stem rotatably mounted and axially slidable in the frame and having a toothed setting pinion which is engageable and disengageable with a plurality of crown teeth arranged on one of the gear train members, the stem setting pinion being arranged on a first axis and the crown tooth gear being arranged on a second axis. The improvement comprises offsetting the first axis so that it does not intersect the second axis and skewing the crown teeth in the direction of offset so that the setting pinion engages the crown teeth from a non-radial direction to facilitate engagement on only one side of the pinion. The offset further facilitates a stem extension in a non-interfering position.

A three hand movement of the type having a frame, a stepping motor mounted in the frame, a manually actutable timesetting stem disposed in the frame and a gear train driven by the stepping motor to rotate coaxial members carrying 'seconds', 'minutes', and 'hours' hands. An improved dual reduction gear assembly comprises a first rotatable member with a toothed wheel and a second rotatable member having first and second pinions driving the 'hours' and 'minutes' wheels. A timesetting gear is adapted to be clutched to the 'minute wheel'. A friction coupling connects the first and second rotatable members during timekeeping. During timesetting, the friction coupling slips to disengage the toothed wheel from the first and second pinions, so that the second rotatable member separately functions as a reduction gear during timesetting.

An improved movement for a three hand quartz analog timepiece having a frame, a stepping motor with the motor pinion adapted to step once per second, and a plurality of coaxial output members rotatably mounted in the frame including a spindle for driving a 'seconds' hand and having a toothed seconds wheel driven by a two-pin rotor pinion, a two-pin reduction drive pinion connected to the spindle, a coaxial sleeve having a toothed minutes wheel and a coaxial sleeves having a toothed hours wheel. The improvement comprises a dual reduction gear assembly with a single shaft rotatably mounted in the frame having a toothed third wheel driven by the reduction drive pinion and having a first reduction pinion and a second reduction pinion directly driving the hours and minutes wheel, respectively, from the same shaft. The first reduction pinion is the two-pin type and the second reduction pinion is a spur gear.
