Deposits and soot formation in a direct injection gasoline engine are reduced by providing as fuel for the operation of said direct injection engine a fuel composition comprising a fuel-soluble cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl compound.

Fuels compositions for direct injection gasoline engines containing manganese compounds

A method, apparatus, and fuel composition for the protection of a catalytic after treatment system and a method for protecting a catalytic after treatment system in a lean burn system are disclosed. A scavenging agent is introduced into the combustion chamber in an amount effective to complex with catalytic poisoning combustion byproducts and improve emissions system durability. In a preferred embodiment, the scavenger is an organometallic compound which also imparts additional desirable properties to the fuel.

Trimethylaluminum is made by gradually feeding a methyl halide to a reaction vessel containing a tri-C.sub.2+ alkylaluminum (e.g. triethylaluminum) and a catalyst formed from a bismuth compound and an alkyl or aryl organoaluminum compound thereby forming trimethylaluminum and C.sub.2+ alkyl halide and continuously distilling the C.sub.2+ alkyl halide, and any methyl halide that fails to react, from the reaction vessel thereby avoiding the accumulation of trialkylaluminum and alkyl halide which not only tends to form alkylaluminum halides but can be very hazardous on a large scale if a temperature excursion should occur.

Trimethylaluminum process

A process for the removal of ethylene from silane. Hydrocarbon-contaminated silane is preferably first distilled in a conventional distillation column to remove hydrocarbons boiling higher and lower than silane. Ethylene is removed by passing the silane stream through a column of zeolite, preferably zeolite A having a 4 Angstrom micropore. The 4 Angstrom zeolite A has a high capacity for ethylene and is readily regenerated.
