Certain example embodiments relate to coated articles with sequentially activated low-E coatings, and/or methods of making the same. In certain example embodiments, one or more infrared reflecting layers is/are activated via a non-equilibrium preconditioning activation that uses photons with specific frequencies/frequency ranges, followed by a more equilibrium thermal activation. The preconditioning activation aids in rearranging the silver atoms to energetically favorable positions, while helping to avoid their unwanted agglomeration. The more equilibrium thermal stage of activation aids in aligning the chemical potentials of the layers of the stack and in further densification of the preconditioned silver layer. Doing so, in turn, helps to reduce the likelihood of stresses building-up in the coating, the formation of point and dimensional defects, other unwanted efficiency-reducing phenomena, and/or the like. Advantageously, emissivity can be lowered to a value lower than that achievable using conventional thermal, flash, and laser scanning, approaches alone.

Coated article with sequentially activated low-E coatings, and/or method of making the same

A coated article includes a glass substrate supporting a coating. The coating may include, moving away from the glass substrate, a layer comprising diamond-like carbon (DLC); a layer comprising zinc oxide, wherein a concentration of OH-groups at a surface of the layer comprising zinc oxide farthest from the glass substrate is no greater than about 40%; and a layer comprising aluminum nitride on the glass substrate over and directly contacting the layer comprising zinc oxide. The DLC layer may be temporary, and designed to be burned off during heat treatment.

Coated article with carbon based coating and protective film

A coated article is provided which may be heat treated (e.g., thermally tempered) in certain example instances. In certain example embodiments, the coated article includes a low-emissivity (low-E) coating having a zinc stannate based layer provided over a silver-based infrared (IR) reflecting layer, where the zinc stannate based layer is preferably located between first and second silver based IR reflecting layers. The zinc stannate based layer may be provided between and contacting (i) an upper contact layer of or including Ni and/or Cr (or Ti, or TiOx), and (ii) a layer of or including silicon nitride.

Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to coated articles with low-E coatings having one or more barrier layer systems including multiple dielectric layers, and/or methods of making the same. In certain example embodiments, providing barrier layer systems that each include three or more adjacent dielectric layers advantageously increases layer quality, mechanical durability, corrosion resistance, and/or thermal stability, e.g., by virtue of the increased number of interfaces. These barrier layer systems may be provided above and/or below an infrared (IR) reflecting layer in the low-E coating in different embodiments. Coated articles according to certain example embodiments of this invention may be used in the context of insulating glass (IG) window units, vehicle windows, other types of windows, or in any other suitable application.

Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to articles including anticondensation and/or low-E coatings that are exposed to an external environment, and/or methods of making the same. In certain example embodiments, the anticondensation and/or low-E coatings may be survivable in an outside environment. The coatings also may have a sufficiently low sheet resistance and hemispherical emissivity such that the glass surface is more likely to retain heat from the interior area, thereby reducing (and sometimes completely eliminating) the presence condensation thereon. The articles of certain example embodiments may be, for example, skylights, vehicle windows or windshields, IG units, VIG units, refrigerator/freezer doors, and/or the like.

Articles including anticondensation and/or low-E coatings and/or methods of making the same

A method of making a heat treated (HT) or heat treatable coated article. A method of making a coated article includes a step of heat treating a glass substrate coated with at least layer of or including carbon (e.g., diamond-like carbon (DLC)) and an overlying protective film thereon. In certain example embodiments, the protective film may be of or include both (a) an oxygen blocking or barrier layer, and (b) a release layer of or including zinc oxide. Treating the zinc oxide inclusive release layer with plasma including oxygen (e.g., via ion beam treatment) improves thermal stability and/or quality of the product. Following and/or during heat treatment (e.g., thermal tempering, or the like) the protective film may be entirely or partially removed.

Method of making heat treated coated article with carbon based coating and protective film

A method of making a heat treated coated article includes forming at least one layer comprising diamond-like carbon (DLC) on a glass substrate, and forming a removable protective film on the glass substrate over at least the layer comprising DLC. The removable protective film includes first and second inorganic layers, the first inorganic layer comprising zinc oxide and nitrogen and being located between the layer comprising DLC and the second inorganic layer. The glass substrate may be heat treated so that during the heat treating the protective film prevents significant burnoff of the layer comprising DLC.

Method of making heat treated coated article using diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating and protective film

A method of making an insulating glass (IG) window unit includes: having a coated article including a multi-layered low-E coating on a glass substrate; at least two flexible protective sheets adhered to a top surface of the low-E coating via at least an adhesive layer, and a protective coating over the low-E coating and/or over at least one of the flexible protective sheets in order to substantially fill one or more gaps formed between the low-E coating and the flexible protective sheet(s) and/or between the flexible protective sheets; and following cutting, edge seaming, and/or washing, removing at least part of the temporary protective coating by peeling the protective sheets off and removing at least part of the protective coating when peeling off the protective sheets.

Method of making coated glass article, and intermediate product used in same

There is provided a method of making a heat treated (HT) coated article to be used in shower door applications, window applications, or any other suitable applications where transparent coated articles are desired. For example, certain embodiments of this invention relate to a method of making a coated article including a step of heat treating a glass substrate coated with at least a layer of or including diamond-like carbon (DLC) and an overlying protective film thereon. In certain example embodiments, the protective film may be of or include an oxide of zinc. Following and/or during heat treatment (e.g., thermal tempering, or the like) the protective film may be removed. Other embodiments of this invention relate to the pre-HT coated article, or the post-HT coated article.
