A method of sealing pavement joints includes the steps of dispensing a first band of void reducing joint composition on a substrate. Applying a first pass of pavement over at least a portion of the void reducing joint composition. Dispensing a second pass of void reducing joint composition on the substrate. Applying a second pass of pavement of the second band of void reducing joint composition and against an edge of the first pass of pavement.

Void reducing asphalt membrane composition, method and apparatus for asphalt paving applications

A void reducing asphalt membrane composition for asphalt pavements that includes: an asphalt binder; an elastomeric polymer; a wax modifier; and at least one of: i) fumed silica or fumed alumina; and ii) a saponified fatty acid and a resin acid gelling compound. The composition is resistant to flow when applied and migrates into hot mix asphalt in the area of the longitudinal joint to reduce air voids to 7% or less and reduce water permeability. The composition becomes tack-free quickly after application. The composition bonds to asphalt, concrete, brick, stone and metal.

A roadway structure that includes: a substrate; a hot mix application portion positioned over the substrate, wherein said hot mix application portion comprises first and second adjacent paving passes defining a longitudinal joint, and wherein the first and second adjacent paving passes contain air voids along the longitudinal joint; and a spray-applied band of void reducing joint composition positioned between the substrate and the hot mix application portion, wherein the band is below the longitudinal joint, and wherein at least at portion of the void reducing joint composition fills at least some of the air voids.

A method of forming a pavement construction joint that involves dispensing a band of a void reducing joint composition on a substrate using at least one spray application vehicle, wherein the band comprises a width of about 4 to about 24 inches. A paving pass is applied over the band of joint composition, wherein the paving pass is positioned against an edge of a previously laid portion of pavement to form a pavement construction joint having a volume of air voids. At least a portion of the joint composition migrates upward to reduce the volume of air voids. The composition is resistant to flow when applied and migrates into hot mix asphalt in the area of the longitudinal joint to reduce air voids to 7% or less and reduce water permeability. The composition becomes tack-free quickly after application. The composition bonds to asphalt, concrete, brick, stone and metal.

A modified asphalt binder composition prepared by combining asphalt binder, phosphorus pentasulfide, and less than 2.5 parts by weight unsaturated polymer, per 100 parts by weight asphalt binder, to thereby produce a modified asphalt binder composition characterized by an elongation recovery at 25&#xb0; C., as determined according to AASHTO T301, of greater than 75%.

A modified asphalt binder composition prepared by combining asphalt binder, phosphorus pentasulfide, and less than 2.5 parts by weight unsaturated polymer, per 100 parts by weight asphalt binder, to thereby produce a modified asphalt binder composition characterized by an elongation recovery at 25&#xb0; C., as determined according to AASHTO T301, of greater than 75%, where the phosphorus pentasulfide includes a blend of PSand PS.

A method for forming a modified asphalt binder composition, the method comprising preparing a phosphorus pentasulfide-binder concentrate by introducing and mixing phosphorus pentasulfide and asphalt binder, where the phosphorus pentasulfide-binder concentrate includes greater than 0.5 parts by weight phosphorus pentasulfide per 100 parts by weight asphalt, preparing a polymer-binder concentrate by introducing and mixing polymer and asphalt binder, where the polymer-binder concentrate includes greater than 5 parts by weight polymer per 100 parts by weight asphalt, and introducing and mixing the phosphorus pentasulfide-binder concentrate with the polymer-binder concentrate to form a modified asphalt binder composition, where the phosphorus pentasulfide includes a blend of PSand PS.

A method for forming a modified asphalt binder composition, the method comprising preparing a phosphorus pentasulfide-binder concentrate by introducing and mixing phosphorus pentasulfide and asphalt binder, where the phosphorus pentasulfide-binder concentrate includes greater than 0.5 parts by weight phosphorus pentasulfide per 100 parts by weight asphalt, preparing a polymer-binder concentrate by introducing and mixing polymer and asphalt binder, where the polymer-binder concentrate includes greater than 5 parts by weight polymer per 100 parts by weight asphalt, and introducing and mixing the phosphorus pentasulfide-binder concentrate with the polymer-binder concentrate to form a modified asphalt binder composition.

A process for preparing a modified asphalt binder composition, the process comprising mixing asphalt, an unsaturated polymer, and phosphorus pentasulfide to form a modified asphalt composition.

An additive composition than can be incorporated into asphalt materials to impart thereto multigrade characteristics. The additive is prepared by reacting together at least one saponifiable organic acid, at least one resin acid, at least one unsaturated organic compound, and an alkali metal base to form a reaction product. Water produced during the reaction is removed as the reaction proceeds. The resulting reaction product can be formed into a powder and combined together with asphalt materials to produce multigrade asphalts.

Multigrade asphalt power additive

A gelled asphalt cement having improved properties over conventional asphalt cement, including reduced temperature susceptibility and lower rate of age hardening is disclosed. This multigrade asphalt cement is produced by gelling a liquefied asphalt material. This is accomplished by saponifying in the liquefied asphalt, substantially free of water, at least one fatty acid and at least one resin acid with an alkali metal base, or by adding the already saponified product to the liquefied asphalt. The resulting gelled asphalt cement is utilized in conventional processes in road, roofing and specialty applications. The asphalt cement may be prepapred and applied using conventional hot-mix asphalt processes in existing hot-mix equipment, standard roofing application equipment and specialty asphalt application equipment.
