A covered sample plate with wells holding samples to be dried. The cover has through holes that communicate with only a portion of each well. The covered plate is inserted into a cradle of an assembly of cradles that is rotated. The cradle assembly fits into a tub and when rotated the cradles present a sold wall that functions as a centrifugal fan that drives air out through an opening in the tub. The air is dried of solvent and re-circulated back through the through holes in the cover to the sample wells.

Accelerated evaporation process and apparatus utilizing re-circulating loops

A fraction collector, sample drier that automatically re-fills sample contains is described. Profiles of RPM and/or back EMF decays as a rotating but unpowered rotor comes to a stop are generated. The profiles may be generated for rotors with full, partially filled and empty sample containers. During a drying operation as the non-volatile samples are collected by evaporating the liquids more sample may be loaded while the rotor is spinning. The operation is to unpower the mechanism and measure the decay profile of PPM and/or EMF over time. A threshold may be set so that the lighter rotor will stop more quickly, and if the threshold is crossed the mechanism will load more sample into the containers.

Process and apparatus to automatically refill evaporation apparatus

A drying container insert that manages the evaporation rate of liquid solutions when subjected to blow-down gas flows. Certain gas flow separator baffles or framed inserts with vanes may be especially effective to enhance evaporation when combined with aggressive blow-down flow rates and centrifugal force. The centrifugal force applied to the evaporating liquid protects sample integrity by preventing the solution(s) from splashing out of the drying container. Such splashing, when high blow-down gas flow rates are directed into the sample containers, affects yield and purity.

Device and method for increasing evaporation rates of blow-down apparatus

This disclosure describes a sample drying system and method that provides a high rates of evaporation and sublimation that is commonly employed in compound processing procedures. The drying increases the sample-solute concentration and removes the solvent completely to produce the dried sample as a non-volatile solute precipitate. Re-circulating of drying gas is disclosed along with a solvent cold trap.

Apparatus and method for drying a solid or liquid sample

A centrifugal fraction collection system including a rotating carrier for holding at least one sample collection container and inducing a centrifugal force, a guide disposed on the rotating carrier, and a flexible eluant tube disposed over the rotating carrier and through the guide for receiving a flow of eluant having volatile and non-volatile components and directing the flow of eluant into at least one sample collection container wherein the centrifugal force separates the non-volatile and volatile components based on their respective densities and collects the non-volatile components in at least one sample collection container.

Centrifugal fraction collection system and method

The invention is directed to a high throughput capillary electrophoresis (CE) system, which comprises multiple mobile CE detector modules that are transportable by a programmable fluid-handling arm assembly to fixed samples in microtiter plate wells for analysis. The CE system of the invention is capable of simultaneously automating sample preparation and multiple CE analysis of the sample in a continuous timely process. The CE detector modules of the invention may be equipped with any suitable detection method, such as an ultraviolet (UV) absorbance or a laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detector.

High throughput capillary electrophoresis system

A probe for measuring distances of clincal interest in a patient undergoing dental treatment has an end which is placed adjacent a first point and a tip which is extendable to a second point. A measurement apparatus in the housing, provides an output signal representative of the distance between the two points. An analyzer responsive to the output signal determines the distance. A friction mechanism assures that no more than a predetermined amount offorce is applied to the probe, making repetitive measurements accurate and avoiding damage to tissues. A microcomputer and printer analyze the data and present the data in a useful format. The tip of the probe is provided with storage apertures for use in delivering medication via the probe member. The probe is provided with an optical fibre cable and an optical encoder which is supported for rotary motion within the housing for eliminating cable twist evolved during manipulation. The tip of the probe is replaceable and provided with a frangible support which prevents reuse.

Measuring probe

An apparatus for measuring the distance between two points in a patient undergoing dental diagnosis or treatment which includes a housing having an end which is placeable adjacent a first of said points. A distance measurement apparatus is coupled to the housing and provides an output signal representative of the distance between the two points. An analyzer responsive to the output signal determines the distance. The distance measurement apparatus may include an elongate probe slidably mounted in the housing so as to be extendable from one point to the other when the end of the housing is placed adjacent one said point. A probe actuator causes the probe to slide in the housing. A motion detector is responsive to motion of the probe with respect to the housing and provides an output which is useful for determining the position of the probe with respect to the housing. The probe actuator may be manually activated. A friction mechanism may be provided to assure that a predetermined force is utilized to move the probe so that measurement accuracy is enhanced. The analyzer may include a microcomputer for analyzing the data produced and for presenting the data in a displayable format.
