A tie rod for spanning a duct interior to join duct walls bounding the duct interior, that can be simply and inexpensively fabricated from sheet metal or other suitable material, including automatically, securely fastenable quickly and easily to the duct walls, often by one person, and which can be configured to be nestable for efficient storage and shipping, of elongate construction for spanning a duct interior, with a transverse attachment flange or flanges that can be pre-bent or bent onsite at the installation location via special bending features to snug to a duct wall, and include holes for threadedly receiving fasteners, having a shape and size to reduce fastening torque, with a two attachment flange configuration that resiliently self retains the fastener against loosening from vibration and other forces.

A fastening member for joining together adjacent duct sections includes a head and a shank extending from the head, the shank having an unthreaded space adjacent to the head and a threaded portion extending from the unthreaded space, the threaded portion threadedly engaging a hole of an inserted corner plate positioned in flange of a first duct section. When the fastening member is fully inserted, the inserted corner plate positioned in the flange of the first duct section is retained within the unthreaded space.

System and method for joining and hanging ducts

A unitary support assembly for connecting an air transport duct to a support includes a body portion, a duct connecting means integrally formed with the body portion for selectively securing the support assembly to the air transport duct, and a support connecting means integrally formed with the body portion opposite the duct connecting means for selectively securing the support assembly to the support.

Method and apparatus for suspending duct by inserted corner members

A system and method of assembling flanged duct sections, using large sheet metal screws through opposing inserted corner plates. The large screws are threadedly inserted fully through the corner plates of a first duct section and hold perpendicular thereto for guiding alignment with the mating duct section. The screws hold the duct sections apart to allow aligning them without fluid sealant or tape gasket material on one of the duct sections contacting the other. The screws are then threadedly engaged with the corner plates of the mating duct section, bringing the duct sections together with a leak resistant seal therebetween. Optional hanger brackets can be placed between the corner plates before assembly, and additional screws used to deform the flanges and corner plates about the brackets to compress the sealant or gasket thereabout.

A vertical Pittsburgh seam closing apparatus having a base supporting surface for positioning a duct section thereon in a vertical orientation, a track mechanism for moving a pair of carriage assemblies each having seam forming members used to close a Pittsburgh seam, a pair of upper and lower guide members for guiding the duct section into a proper position, and upper and lower clamping members movable between an unclamped position and a clamped position wherein each clamping member is positioned inside the duct section and adjacent the inside portion of the Pittsburgh seam to be closed, the upper guide members and clamping member being selectively movable and adjustable for accommodating different duct section lengths. In one embodiment, each seam forming assembly includes a pair of roller members mounted in vertical arrangement to each other, one roller member being V-shaped in configuration and the other roller member being substantially cylindrical in shape.

Apparatus for closing Pittsburgh seams associated with duct assemblies and other box-shaped members

A vertical Pittsburgh seam closing apparatus having a base supporting surface for positioning a duct section thereon in a vertical orientation, a track mechanism for moving a carriage assembly which holds seam forming members used to close a Pittsburgh seam, a pair of upper and lower guide members for guiding the duct section into a proper position, and upper and lower clamping members movable between an unclamped position and a clamped position wherein each clamping member is positioned inside the duct section and adjacent the inside portion of the Pittsburgh seam to be closed, the upper guide members and clamping member being selectively movable and adjustable for accommodating different duct section lengths. In one embodiment, the seam forming assembly includes a pair of roller members mounted in vertical arrangement to each other, one roller member being V-shaped in configuration and the other roller member being substantially cylindrical in shape.

Apparatus for closing pittsburgh seams associated with duct assemblies and other box-shaped members

A corner flange connection member for joining flanges of duct sections, includes two leg portions joined together in an angular relationship by a corner portion, the connection member being substantially flat and including at least one opening for receiving a fastening member having a threaded portion, the threaded portion having a root diameter, the opening being defined by two joined and offset partially rounded openings, at least one of the offset partially rounded openings having a sectional extent between opposite sides thereof about equal to the root diameter of the threaded portion of the fastening member, the offset being about equal to a thread height of threads of the threaded portion of the fastening member, and the sides of the offset openings being joined generally tangentially. The opening or openings can be located in the corner portion or one or both of the leg portions.

Sheet metal corner for duct flanges

In one embodiment, an improved high-speed corner flange connection member is disclosed which includes creases or bends allowing the leg portions to be bent or angularly deflected away from such creases downwardly so as to form a bowed configuration. In some embodiments, the connection member includes clearance holes and tap holes which are strategically positioned such that when a pair of duct sections are positioned in end-to-end relationship for joinder, the opposed connection members are arranged such that a clearance hole is positioned in registration with a tap hole; other embodiments include similarly shaped openings which are associated with the respective opposed connection members; and in still other embodiments, a substantially flat corner element is constructed utilizing the strategically placed clearance and tap holes. A plurality of differently configured high-speed fastener members for substantially eliminating misalignment and cross-threading issues are also disclosed.

An apparatus and method for selectively forming metal stud and track members from sheet material, the apparatus including a stud forming assembly capable of transforming the sheet material into a stud member as the material exits the stud forming assembly, and a track forming assembly capable of receiving the stud member as it exists the stud forming assembly and thereafter transforming the stud member into a track member. The track forming assembly is selectively moveable between an operative position wherein the track forming assembly is coupled to the stud forming assembly to receive the stud member as it exits the stud forming assembly, and an inoperative position wherein the track forming assembly is positioned such that it cannot receive the stud member as it exits the stud forming assembly. The apparatus may also include punch and shear mechanisms for performing various operations on the sheet material.

Quick change metal stud to hemmed track roll forming system

A duct assembly for transporting pressurized fluid therethrough. The assembly includes first and second duct sections. Each of the duct sections has sides extending between opposite ends. Each of the sides join an adjacent side and has a flange extending laterally outward from each end. The first and second sections are positioned in end-to-end relation so that the flanges extending outward from one of the ends of the first section face the flanges extending outward from one of the ends of the second section to define flange pairs. The assembly also includes a plurality of connector pairs. Each of the connector pairs are positioned at one of the ends of the duct sections. Each of the connector pairs includes a first connector spanning adjacent flanges of the first duct section and a second connector spanning adjacent flanges of the second duct section. The first and second connectors are positioned on opposite faces of an adjacent flange pair so the flange pair is positioned between the first and second connectors. Further, the assembly includes fasteners extending through one of the connector pairs and one of the flange pairs to connect the flange pairs. In addition, methods and apparatus for use in making the duct assemblies are disclosed.

Method of attaching a connector element to a duct flange

A duct assembly made from multiple duct sections for transporting pressurized fluid therethrough which can be formed simply by laborers at a building site or elsewhere and has a strong joint resistant to leakage. The joint rigidizes each duct section and the duct assembly, permitting duct assemblies including a greater number of joined duct sections to be put together and lifted into place The joint is formed by passing fasteners through a corner flange connection member associated with one duct section, through integral flanges of the one duct section and other duct section arranged in end-to-end relation with the one duct section, and through a corner flange connection member associated with the other duct section. The act of installing the fastener tightly pulls together the integral flanges and makes and integral connection between them. Additional sealing may be provided applying a flowable sealant between the flanges before the fasteners are tightened to bring the integral flanges of the duct sections into clamping relationship. The joint can be formed using conventional corner pieces which are modified to accept fasteners simultaneously through the corner pieces and integral flanges of the duct section. A method of assembly and a corner flange connection member are also disclosed.

A straightener device for substantially removing the &ldquo;coil set&rdquo; from a sheet of coiled material including a base frame assembly and a head assembly rotatably mounted thereto, the head assembly including a pair of feed rollers and an idler roller, the pair of feed rollers being positioned relative to each other for receiving the sheet material therebetween, the idler roller being positioned adjacent the feed rollers so as to engage the sheet material as the sheet material passes between the feed rollers, and the head assembly being rotatable about an axis of rotation such that the direction of travel of the sheet material as it exits the head assembly can be varied relative to a horizontal plane. At least one of the feed rollers is selectively adjustable relative to the other feed roller so as to vary the space therebetween depending upon the thickness of the sheet material, and the idler roller is selectively positionable relative to the feed rollers. The present head assembly can therefore be easily rotated to vary the direction of travel of the straightened sheet material as such sheet material exits the head assembly including a direction of travel which will be substantially parallel to a horizontal plane in order to accommodate other manufacturing processes.

Rotatable head assembly for sheet metal coil straightener device

Apparatus for inserting a corner member into channel-shaped flanges of a duct. The corner member has first and second legs. The duct includes longitudinally extending duct panels. The channel-shaped flanges of the duct extend laterally from at least one end of the duct panels. The apparatus a corner member support mechanism adapted for supporting the corner member, a duct moving mechanism, and a pressing mechanism. The duct moving mechanism has a duct pusher moveable between a first position and a second position. The duct pusher imparts a moving force against the duct upon movement of the duct pusher from its first position to its second position. The duct moving mechanism moves the duct toward the corner member and to a position in which adjacent flanges of the duct are in registration with the legs of the corner member upon movement of the duct pusher from its first position to its second position when the corner member is being supported by the corner member support mechanism and when the duct pusher is imparting the moving force against the duct. The pressing mechanism has at least one pressing member moveable between a non-pressing position and a pressing position. The pressing mechanism presses the corner member into the duct flanges upon movement of the pressing member from its non-pressing position to its pressing position when the flanges of the duct are in registration with the legs of the corner member.
