In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, a method for measuring a quality parameter of an optical storage system comprising a non-diffraction-limited optical storage medium and a readout device, the method comprising the process of deriving an impulse response of the optical storage system, and the process of analyzing the impulse response to determine at least one of a width of the impulse response and a skewness of the impulse response as the quality parameter.

Method and system for determining the quality of a storage system

The apparatus includes a pickup for reading data from a super-resolution optical disc, the pickup comprising a laser for generating a main beam, a first and a second satellite beam, the two satellite beams each having a radial offset with regard to the main beam, a third satellite beam following the first satellite beam, having the same radial offset as the first satellite beam, and a fourth satellite beam following the second satellite beam, having the same radial offset as the second satellite beam, for providing a crosstalk correction of the HF data signal. The track pitch between adjacent tracks of the optical disc is particularly below the diffraction limit of the pickup, and the light intensity of each of the first and second satellite beams and of the main beam is sufficient to provide a super-resolution effect on the optical disc and the light intensity of each of the third and fourth satellite beams is not sufficient to provide the super-resolution effect. The track pitch between adjacent tracks of the optical disc is advantageously below the diffraction limit of the pickup.

Methods for operating an apparatus for reading from or writing to a Super-RENS optical recording medium, an apparatus for reading from Super-RENS optical recording media using such methods, and a Super-RENS optical recording medium suitable for such methods are described. The super-RENS optical recording medium has location information that is readable without super-RENS effect. The location information is provided as low-frequency information. For locating a position on the super-RENS optical recording medium, a reading light beam with a power below a power necessary for achieving a super-RENS effect is generated and the location information is retrieved from the super-RENS optical recording medium.

The optical storage medium comprises a substrate layer, a data layer having a pit/land data structure with data arranged in tracks on the substrate layer and a nonlinear layer with a super-resolution material, wherein the data structure comprises diffractive pits and lands having a size above an optical resolution limit of a pickup for reading of the data and super-resolution pits and lands having a size below the optical resolution limit, said pits and lands having a defined length with regard to a channel bit length. A diffractive land preceding a super-resolution pit is changed by a first length depending on the laser power of the pickup, and/or a diffractive pit preceding a super-resolution land is changed by the first length depending on the laser power of the pickup, to compensate a phase shift of the super-resolution pit, respectively super-resolution land.

Since the phosphor lag effect results from the slowness of the green and red phosphors and since it is not possible to make these phosphors faster, the blue one has to be made slower in order to reduce the color trail effect. Therefore, a part of the blue component is artificially delayed. Only a certain percentage of the blue component of the actual frame is transmitted during the actual frame, whereas the rest of the blue component will be transmitted during the next frames. The dynamic false contour effect introduced by this video processing may be compensated by subfield shifting.

The present invention relates to a method of displaying video images on a plasma display panel. The invention is applicable in plasma display panels. According to the invention, in order to achieve contouring movement compensation, the subscans are divided into two symmetrical groups of subscans. Moreover, the movement of the video image to be displayed with respect to the preceding video image is estimated so as to generate a movement vector for each pixel of the video image. Finally, for each pixel of the video image, the subscans of the second group are displaced by an amount proportional to the estimated movement vector.

The invention corrects display faults due to the disparities between the phosphors of a display device. The correction is carried out by image processing. The invention provides a method for displaying a sequence of video images on a phosphor device comprising at least two types of phosphors together with the device comprising the means for implementing this method. The correction is carried out by computing an intermediate image between two successive images, then by displaying one of the two successive images on one type of phosphor and by simultaneously displaying the intermediate image on another type of phosphor.
