A network interface for the secure transmission of data comprises a functionally encapsulated unit that encompasses the elements required to ensure a minimum functionality of the network interface, with access from the outside of said encapsulated unit being possible only via specific shared services. Reliable transmission between nodes of a communication network is ensured by encapsulating a network interface of at least one of the nodes, and by ensuring a minimal functionality of the network interface.

A digital network for communication between a plurality of subscribers by means of streaming data comprises at least one subscriber that is a transmitter, and at least one subscriber that is a receiver. At least one transmitter is adapted to be activated, and then to feed streaming data in the form of broadcasts or multicasts into the network. Furthermore, at least one receiver is adapted to be activated, and then to select from the network streaming data that are compatible with its data formats, and to read the selected streaming data from the network.

A communication system, network, interface, and port architecture are provided for transporting different types of data across a network. The network can be arranged by connecting the ports in a daisy chain fashion to achieve a ring architecture or topology. The network forwards data according to a specific network protocol, and any incoming data that follows that protocol will be sent onto the network. If the incoming data protocol does not match the network protocol, then the incoming data is not sent immediately to the network, but instead is sent to an input pin of a device upon the network specifically designed to receive that incoming data. The network, therefore, has ports that support both compliant and non-compliant incoming data, and the devices that produce such data. Examples of non-compliant data include any data which does not time-division multiplex different asynchronous, isochronous, and synchronous data in dedicated channels within each frame, and which have a preamble, coding, frequency, or overall protocol different from that which is established for network transfer.

Network devices of a digital network for communication between a plurality of devices have a source for transmitting data into the network, and sinks for receiving data from the network. Managers (logical controllers) to which priorities are assigned in a hierarchical order manage connections between sources and sinks. Before setting up a connection, a manager first queries a negotiation administrator to obtain a right to negotiate with other managers and to set up connections. When all other managers having higher priorities also have granted the connection, the manager connects sources and sinks.

The sub-networks have different transmission rates and are connected to each other via at least one gateway. A method for the common transmission of digital source and control data between data sources and sinks connected through data lines, includes transmitting the source and control data in a format prescribing a clocked sequence of individual bit groups of equal length. In each bit group, at least one bit position is reserved for the transmission of unformatted data. The unformatted data are allocated bitwise to the reserved bit positions of successive bit groups and are associated with a certain data source/data sink as a function of the control data.

The communication system has a plurality of subscribers connected through respective interface circuits to a ring feeder for the common transmission of digital source data and control data. The source data and control data are transmitted in a format which prescribes a pulsed sequence of individual bit groups of equal length. The bit groups are subdivided into component bit groups each forming a data channel. At least one date channel is provided for control data which are transmitted in data packets with a destination address. Furthermore, the interface circuit of each subscriber contains an address decoder. The communication system is simplified, and changes to the system are made easier in that at least one subscriber has a special address by means of which a received data packet is fed directly to an instruction decoder inside the interface circuit, which decodes to the bit base an instruction code contained in the data packet. The interface circuit, i.e., the subscriber reacts immediately to a corresponding instruction in the instruction code.

A method for entering and leaving a power-saving operation of a subscriber in an annular communication network includes transmitting data in the communication network in a format that prescribes a pulsed sequence of individual bit groups of identical length in which specific bit positions are reserved for a preamble which is decoded in a receive circuit of each subscriber. During a power-saving operation of a subscriber, at least part of the subscriber which contains the receive circuit remains turned on, and at least one special preamble code is provided, upon the reception of which a part of the subscriber turned off during the power-saving operation is turned on again.

In these bit groups, certain bit positions are each reserved for the source and control data and the bit positions reserved for the source data form a cohesive region within one bit group. The region of a bit group reserved for the source data is subdivided into a plurality of partial bit groups of equal length. The source data assigned to each partial bit group are allocated to a certain data source/data sink as a function of the control data.

A method for compensating for propagation time delays in a communication network includes connecting each of a plurality of subscribers to a ring feeder for a common transmission of digital source data and control data in a data stream synchronous with a clock signal. The source and control data are transmitted in a format prescribing a pulsed sequence of individual bit groups of identical length containing component bit groups each forming a data channel for source data or control data. At least two subscribers, which are connected at different locations to the ring feeder, receive source data that are transmitted by one of the subscribers on different data channels and are correlated with one another. Specific bit positions are reserved in each bit group for a numerical value relayed from subscriber to subscriber. The numerical value is always set by one of the subscribers to a fixed initial value and incremented by each following subscriber along the ring feeder. Propagation time differences in the mutually correlated source data are compensated for on the basis of the numerical value.

A method for transmitting digital data over data lines between subscribers forming data sources and data sinks and being disposed in a network having a ring structure and connecting a plurality of subscribers to one another with network segments each being formed between two adjacent subscribers, includes transmitting the data in the network in a format specifying a clocked sequence of individual bit groups of equal length, each including at least one partial bit group forming a data channel to be assigned temporarily to two subscribers in the network for a data transmission. A temporary allocation of the data channels for a data transmission between two subscribers takes place segmentally in the network, for optimal utilization of the data transmission capacity of the network only those network segments that are located between the applicable data source and the associated data sink are occupied for the particular data transmission.
