The invention relates to a method and device for simple and efficient determining characteristics during a transition between an AAL2 signalling protocol and at least one another signalling protocol of at least one communication network. The inventive method and device are characterised in that at least one characteristic is determined on the basis of parametric values assigned to the AA2 signalling protocol and in that the determined characteristics are used for reproducing the parametric values of the AA2 signalling protocol in the parametric values of another signalling protocol.

Determination of characteristics during the transition between an AAL2 signalling and another signalling

The invention discloses removal of ATM cells from an ATM communications device. A first algorithm is provided by means of which, with the exception of a first and a last ATM cell in a frame, all newly arriving cells in the frame are removed. A second algorithm is provided by means of which all the ATM cells in a frame, from a first cell to a last cell, are removed on arrival in a queue from the ATM communications device. At a start of a transmission process, a user indicates a maximum number of ATM cells per frame, and the ATM cells using the number are transmitted when the maximum number is exceeded, the associated frame is discarded or the first algorithm is used. The invention solves this problem by defining rules whose application results in this method now being used only to a very limited extent.

In an ATM communication system or communication terminal the cell loss priority information (CLP) in operation, maintenance, administration and resource-management cells (OAM) that are inserted between cells (DP, DP) of a virtual connection (GFR-Vx) with a guaranteed frame rate, is detected by determining the cell loss priority information (CLP) of the cell (DP) of the respective virtual connection (GFR-Vx) which is actually to be transmitted and by inserting said information in the operation, maintenance, administration and resource-management cells (OAM).

A method for aligning packet loss priority information for overload control of a data-packet-switching communications device wherein data packets and respectively allocated packet loss priority information are transmitted to the communications device and buffered in relation to a specific connection. The packet loss priority information is then read from the buffered data packets and modified according to the connection type or the application-specific data traffic type. After the data packet has been switched in the communications device, the original packet loss priority information which was switched with the data packets is re-inserted into the corresponding data packet.

Method for aligning of packet loss priority information in a data-packet switching communication device

A decision algorithm for discarding frames is disclosed. A method is disclosed including the application of rules which results in the limited use of the Partial Packet Discard (PPD) method and results in the ATM cells which are not assigned to a frame not being discarded. According to the described Early Packet Discard (EPD) system, all the cells in a frame, from the first cell to the last cell, are removed from an ATM communications device upon arrival in a queue. The EPD system results in no residual cells remaining from a damaged frame or from a frame which is to be removed for other reasons. Additionally, each connection has a Maximum Frame Size (MFS), which is measured in cells and depends on the connection. Thus, increased space is available for other ATM cells.

In VBR connections, control cells are inserted into the stream of ATM cells. These control cells are fed back to the transmitting device. In order to allow control to be carried out efficiently, the stream of ATM cells associated with the VBR connections is measured and is supplied to a control method. The result of this control method is then, if required, entered in the information portion of control cells that are transmitted back.

The method proposed in ITU-I.371.1 for the individualized-connection determination of the currently allowed transmission rate of ATM cells is inventively realized with the assistance of list parameters, whereby the list parameters indicate the plurality of current intermediately stored transmission rates and their size relationship relative to one another. For forwarding the message cells belonging to these virtual connections, a minimum delay time by which the forwarding of a message cell is at least delayed is calculated according to the criterion of the plurality of message cells incoming and outgoing per time unit during the course of the respective virtual connection, taking the peak bit rate into consideration. On the other hand, a maximum delay time by which the forwarding of a message cell is to be at most delayed is calculated according to the criterion of the plurality of message cells incoming and outgoing per time unit during the course of the respective virtual connection taking the upper limit of the average bit rate into consideration. Taking the calculated minimum and maximum delay time into consideration, finally a delay time is determined for forwarding a message cell present at the moment.

Method and circuit arrangement for forwarding message unit cells

During the course of virtual connections, message cells are transmitted via the ATM communication equipment (KE) working according to an asynchronous transfer mode and are forwarded to a serving trunk (A1, . . . , An) coming into consideration for the respective virtual connection. Characteristic parameters corresponding to the traffic characteristic of the message cell stream to be transmitted are thereby determined for the respective virtual connection during the course of the call setup. Based on the criterion of these characteristic parameters, a time interval for the forwarding of a message cell to the serving trunk coming into consideration is determined for every message cell transmitted via the ATM communication equipment. It is thereby provided that the time interval for the respective message cell is only determined with the forwarding of a message cell of the same virtual connection that immediately precedes it.
