A method for increasing an adhesive to a substrate is disclosed which utilizes a hydrophilic, high molecular weight, nonionic polyurethane adhesive. The polyurethane adhesive is soluble in water and a 1% by weight solution of the adhesive in water at 20% has a specific viscosity of at least 0.4. The nonionic polyurethane contains the following structural units:

An adhesive useful in forming composites includes components A and B. Component A includes at least one polyester with a molecular weight (M ) of at least 8000 and has a total enthalpy of fusion of at most 20 mJ/mg. Component B includes at least one polyester with a molecular weight (Mn) of less than 8000 and a glass transition temperature of at most 60&deg; C. The adhesive preferably has a melt viscosity of 500 to 25,000 mPas (Brookfield RVT DVII, 140&deg; C., spindle 27) and a softening point of 70 to 100&deg; C. (ASTM E28).

Adhesive and the utilization thereof in composite materials

The invention relates to a contact adhesive based on a polyurethane of at least one diisocyanate and at least one low molecular weight polyethylene glycol, the polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of up to 2,000 and the polyurethane having a degrees of crystallization of less than 20%. The contact adhesive can be applied from the melt or from an aqueous solution or dispersion. Surprisingly, it is suitable not only for polar plastic surface, but above all for PE and PP surfaces and of course for paper. Accordingly, the contact adhesive is preferably useful for applying paper labels to PE bottles.

Polyurethane adhesive

The bondability of a polyolefin, particularly to cyanoacrylate adhesives, is improved by incorporating in the polyolefin a polymerization initiator capable of initiating the polymerization of the monomers constituting the cyanoacrylate adhesive. The polymerization initiator may, for example, be a sterically hindered nitrogen base and may be mixed with the polyolefin at a temperature above the polyolefin's glass transition temperature using, for example, co-extrusion or co-injection methods.

Hydrophilic polyurethanes

Polymerizable compositions containing titanium, manganese and/or zirconium salts of olefinically unsaturated, polymerizable carboxylic acids and other olefinically unsaturated comonomers and a radical polymerization initiator are suitable for the organic coil coating of metallic materials. These non-aqueous metal coatings are suitable for the chromium-free pretreatment of steel with excellent corrosion control.

A process for making a polyolefin composition having improved adhesive and/or coating compatibility involving: (a) providing a polyolefin; (b) providing from 0.01 to 10% by weight, based on the weight of the polyolefin, of a migratable amphiphile; (c) providing from 0.01 to 1000 ppm, based on the weight of the polyolefin, of a transition metal selected from the group consisting of titanium, tin, and mixtures thereof; and (d) combining (a)-(c) to form the polyolefin composition.

Improved autodeposited coatings on metallic surfaces are formed by contacting the metallic surfaces with an autodepositing composition comprising an acidic aqueous coating solution containing dispersed solid resin particles or either an internally stabilized or externally stabilized vinylidene chloride polymer, an exemplary internally stabilized polymer being prepared from vinylidene chloride and a monomeric surfactant which includes an inorganic ionizable group, and an exemplary externally stabilized polymer being prepared from vinylidene chloride and a reactive comonomer, the resulting resin particles having surfactant adsorbed thereon, said autodeposited coatings having extremely good corrosion resistant properties without treatment with a reaction rinse such as a chromium rinse.
