A sensor probe device for monitoring atmosphere within a chamber. The device includes a housing that extends through a wall of the chamber being monitored, and a tubular sleeve that is movably captured within the housing. The sleeve includes an open end for receiving a sensor probe, and a closed end having a plurality of radially spaced apertures that extend through the sleeve wall. The apertures provide an open ribbed portion that exposes the enclosed sensor probe to chamber atmosphere when the sleeve portion is inserted into the chamber. A drive mechanism is attached to either extend the open ribbed portion of the sleeve outward from its shielded position within the housing to an extended position within the chamber, or retract the sleeve portion from the chamber back into its shielded position within the housing. An air supply is provided to inject forced air into the sleeve to maintain sensor probe integrity by purging contaminates through a drain in the sleeve wall, and an external air wipe nozzle is attached to the closed end of the sleeve to provide an air flow along the sleeve to prevent chamber atmosphere from entering the sleeve through the radially spaced apertures.

This invention is directed to a coating method and to the product produced by such method. In the preferred practice of this invention, the method includes the steps of selecting a ferrous substrate, such as steel sheet preferably containing a first coating having certain corrosion resistant and adhesion-promoting characteristics, and applying thereto an outer coating of an organic resin containing a particulate metallic aluminum-zinc alloy which is between 5 and 95% by weight aluminum, balance zinc. Preferably, the particle size of said alloy is no more than about 10 microns. Such product is ideally suited for the subsequent application of a cathodic electrophoretic primer coat, such as widely used in the automotive industry.

This invention is directed to a coating method. In the preferred practice of this invention, the method includes the steps of selecting a ferrous substrate, such as steel sheet preferably containing a first coating having certain corrosion resistant and adhesion-promoting characteristics, applying thereto an outer coating of an organic resin containing a particulate metal selected from the group consisting of Al, Ni, Cr, Fe, Mn, Cu, Mo, Co, Ag, Au and alloys thereof, where the particle size of said metal or alloy is prefereably no more than about 10 microns, and applying thereover a cathodic electrophoretic coating at voltages of at least 300 V. The product of such method is corrosion resistant, free of craters or pores, and is readily welable prior to the application of said cathodic electrophoretic coating.

This invention is directed to a method for producing a corrosion-resistant, composite product, such as sheet and strip, having a thin, uniformly black, light-absorptive surface layer thereon, and to the product of such method. The method includes the steps of treating a product having a coating containing both zinc and aluminum, such as galvanized strip, or up to 70% by weight, aluminum, balance essentially zinc coated strip, with an aqueous alkaline solution for a sufficient time to form a zinc-rich surface on said product, which surface is reactive with a blackening bath containing Ni and Sb, and subjecting such treated product to such blackening bath to form said thin, uniform, light-absorptive surface layer on said product. The light-absorptive surface layer has a thickness of at least 80 nm, preferably between about 100-400 nm, and an absorptance greater than about 95% over the solar radiation spectrum.

A coated ferrous article with improved properties, e.g., improved overall corrosion resistance and good appearance. The article has a ferrous substrate and a ductile, adherent, corrosion resistant alloy coating metallurgically bonded to the substrate. The alloy coating has a thin intermetallic alloy layer intermediate the substrate and an alloy overlay. The alloy overlay consists essentially of, by weight, magnesium from 3% to 20%, silicon from 3% to 15%, balance aluminum and zinc, where the ##EQU1## is between 1 and 1.5. The metallurgical structure of the overlay is a mixture of (1) cored aluminum-rich dendrites having dendrite arm spacings (DAS) of less than 10.mu., (2) zinc-rich interdendritic regions, and (3) intermetallic phases of zinc, aluminum, magnesium and silicon. The article may be produced by hot dip coating a ferrous substrate in a molten metal bath of the above composition.

This invention relates to an aluminum-zinc alloy coated ferrous base product which exhibits improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, and to the process whereby such improved corrosion resistance may be realized. The process is characterized by the steps of heating such coated product to a temperature within the single phase region for the composition corresponding to the aluminum and zinc of said coating, defined as .alpha. in the FIGURE in the accompanying drawing, preferably at a temperature between about 650.degree. F. (343.degree. C.) to 750.degree. F. (399.degree. C.), for a period of time to solution treat the aluminum-zinc alloy coating overlay, and cooling slowly to at least 350.degree. F. (177.degree. C.). The resulting product is characterized by improved atmospheric corrosion resistance as a result of the combination of an aluminum-zinc alloy coating overlay having a structure comprised of a fine dispersion of beta-zinc within a matrix of alpha-aluminum, and a thin intermetallic layer interposed between said overlay and said ferrous base.

This invention is directed to an improved zinc containing metallic coated ferrous product, particularly sheet and strip, which is resistant to intergranular penetration by zinc and embrittlement of the ferrous base. Use of such zinc containing metallic coated ferrous product in elevated-temperature service, such as found with certain appliances and automotive exhaust components, is enhanced by the coated products of this invention. The resistance to embrittlement of the zinc containing metallic coated ferrous base, when subjected to elevated service temperatures, is achieved by the use of a high-phosphorus containing steel base. For a plain content steel base, a phosphorus content of at least 0.020% by weight, preferably at least 0.030%, and more preferably at least 0.039% was found sufficient to render such zinc-alloy coated ferrous base resistant to embrittlement by zinc. By use of such high phosphorus ferrous base, for the reception of a zinc containing alloy coating, an improved metallic coated ferrous product has been found which resists intergranular penetration by zinc and embrittlement of the ferrous base. Such coated product has extended service life at temperatures above about 450.degree. F. (232.degree. C.) and when restored to room temperature possesses a high degree of ductility.
