The present invention relates to the silanization or surface treatment of minerals with alkylsilanes and alkylsilane copolymers. More specifically, the present invention relates to alkylsilane copolymers useful for surface treating pigments or fillers. The alkylsilane copolymers comprise at least two different monomers. The copolymers find particular utility for the surface treatment of white pigments, such as titanium dioxide, for improving the dispersibility and processibility of the pigments when compounded with a polymeric material, in particular, when compounded with polyolefins.

Unsaturated imidosilanes which are essentially free of siloxanes are taught herein for use surface treatments for inorganic solid materials. Novel methods to make such silanes, which do not yield water or siloxanes as a by-product are also taught. Compositions consisting essentially of imidosilane treated inorganic solid materials, resinuous materials and optionally a free radical generator, especially glass fiber reinforced composites, are taught.

Certain members of the class of N-silylalkyl-aspartic acid esters, when used to endcap polyurethane polymers, offer moisture curable, one-part sealant formulations having significantly improved physical property improvements over other members of the same class of organofunctional silanes. More specifically, polyurethane polymers terminated with either the dibutyl or diethyl maleate/primary aminoalkyl silane addition product offer sealants which substantially outperform comparative sealants obtained using polymers endcapped with other olefinic carboxylate ester (dimethyl maleate, dimethyl crotonate) or nitrile (acrylonitrile)/primary aminoalkyl silane addition products. Additionally, sealant formulations incorporating the dibutyl or diethyl maleate/primary aminoalkyl silane terminated polymers demonstrate unexpected improvements in both elongation and tensile strength performance. The dibutyl maleate and dimethyl maleate based polymers give significant increase in tear resistance.

Curable silane-encapped compositions having improved performances

Disclosed are curable compositions based on a curable polymeric component containing hydrolyzable alkoxysilyl groups and also containing an oligomeric component which is composed at least in part of units containing hydrolyzable alkoxysilyl groups. The oligomeric component serves both to lower the viscosity of the composition, and to react with the polymeric component during cure, thereby lessening the use of volatile solvents.

This invention includes di- and tri(alkoxysilylalkyl)- or haloalkoxysilylalkylcyclic pentanes, which may have substituents thereon, including vinyl groups, and their use as waterproofing agents, as crosslinking agents in room temperature vulcanizing silicone caulks, in coating compositions and as surface treatments. The cyclic hydrocarbons are pentane (C.sub.s). The silane groups are attached to the ring through an alkyl group, which may have substituents thereon. Multiple silane groups may be attached to the ring. The silanes may have the standard substituents thereon, including alkoxy and halogens.
