An apparatus for controlling flow of a material includes an inlet for receiving the material from a source, and a seal mechanism connected to the inlet, the seal mechanism having a fluidizing bed configured to receive the material from the inlet, a first discharge passageway and a second discharge passageway. The fluidizing bed includes a first transport zone associated with the first discharge passageway and a second transport zone associated with the second discharge passageway, wherein the first and second transport zones are configured to receive transport gas from a transport gas source. The transport gas is controllable to selectively divert a flow of the material into the first discharge passageway and the second discharge passageway.

System, method and apparatus for controlling the flow direction, flow rate and temperature of solids

A chemical looping system that contains an oxidizer and a reducer is in fluid communication with a gas purification unit. The gas purification unit has at least one compressor, at least one dryer; and at least one distillation purification system; where the gas purification unit is operative to separate carbon dioxide from other contaminants present in the flue gas stream; and where the gas purification unit is operative to recycle the contaminants to the chemical looping system in the form of a vent gas that provides lift for reactants in the reducer.

A hot solids process selectively operable for purposes of generating at least one predetermined output based on what the specific nature of the primary purpose of the hot solids process is for which the at least one predetermined output that is selected from a multiplicity of predetermined outputs, such as H2 and CO2, is being produced, and wherein such primary purpose of the hot solids process is designed to be pre-selected from a group of primary purposes of the hot solids process that includes at least two of the generation of H2 for electric power purposes, the generation of SynGas for electric power production as well as for other industrial uses, the production of steam for electric power generation as well as for other uses, the production of process heat, the production of CO2 for agricultural purposes, and the generation of a feedstock such as H2 for use for the production of liquid hydrocarbons.

Hot solids process selectively operable based on its primary purpose

A gasifierincludes a first chemical process loophaving an exothermic oxidizer reactorand an endothermic reducer reactor. CaS is oxidized in air in the oxidizer reactorto form hot CaSOwhich is discharged to the reducer reactor. Hot CaSOand carbonaceous fuel received in the reducer reactorundergo an endothermic reaction utilizing the heat content of the CaSO, the carbonaceous fuel stripping the oxygen from the CaSOto form CaS and a CO rich syngas. The CaS is discharged to the oxidizer reactorand the syngas is discharged to a second chemical process loop. The second chemical process loophas a water-gas shift reactorand a calciner. The CO of the syngas reacts with gaseous HO in the shift reactorto produce Hand CO. The COis captured by CaO to form hot CaCOin an exothermic reaction. The hot CaCOis discharged to the calciner, the heat content of the CaCObeing used to strip the COfrom the CaO in an endothermic reaction in the calciner, with the CaO being discharged from the calcinerto the shift reactor

A combustorcombust a fluidized bed of fossil fuel' to heat a working fluidand generate flue gas. An air preheaterhas first and second gas passagewaysfor respectively directing the generated flue gasand another gaswith captured COgenerated by combustion outside of the combustor. When operated in a non-COcapture, the air preheaterreceives the flue gas, but not the other gas, and the first gas passagewaydirects the flue gasso as to preheat the air. However, when operated in the COcapture mode, the air preheaterreceives the flue gasand the other gas, and the second gas passagewayalso directs the other gasso as to preheat the air&#x2032;. In a retrofit system for hot solids combustion and gasification, a chemical looping system includes an endothermic reducer reactorhaving at least one materials inletfor introducing carbonaceous fuel and CaCOtherein and a CaS/gas outlet. A first CaS inletand a first CaSOinletare also defined by the reducer reactor. An oxidizer reactoris provided and includes an air inlet, a CaSO/gas outlet, a second CaS inlet, and a second CaSOinlet. A first separatoris in fluid communication with the CaS/gas outletand includes a product gas and a CaS/gas outletandfrom which CaS is introduced into said first and second CaS inlets. A second separatoris in fluid communication with the CaSO/gas outletand has an outletfor discharging gas therefrom, and a CaSOoutlet from which CaSOis introduced into the first and second CaSOinlets. The chemical looping system is in fluid communication with at least a portion of an existing power generation system.

System for hot solids combustion and gasification

A system for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from gasses generated in burning fossil fuel, includes a vessel, separator and reheater. The upper portion of the vessel receives downward flowing, first type solid particles capable of absorbing heat from upward flowing gasses and second type solid particles capable of capturing carbon dioxide from the gasses. The separator separates the second type solid particles with the captured carbon dioxide from the gasses discharged from the first vessel discharge, and directs the separated second type solid particles with the captured carbon dioxide to a separator discharge. The reheater directs the first type solid particles and the second type solid particles with the captured carbon dioxide in a downwardly flow to a first reheater discharge, such that heat from the first type solid particles causes the captured carbon dioxide to be released from the second type solid particles.

The present invention provides, according to one aspect thereof, a computer controlled process for reducing SO from a flue gas. The process includes the basic steps of providing an aqueous treatment solution containing an inorganic salt and a control unit for controlling the introduction of the aqueous treatment solution containing an inorganic salt and controlling the control unit in response to a computer program to effect introduction of the aqueous treatment solution into contact with alkaline earth material. Thereafter, the process includes heating the alkaline earth material in the presence of the flue gas containing SO to remove the SO . The alkaline earth material may be limestone or dolomite. The inorganic salt is selected from the group consisting of thermally decomposable sodium compounds including sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydroxide, sodium nitrate, and sodium acetate. In selected applications of the process of the present invention, the inorganic sodium compound has a concentration of between 0.05 to 5 percent of the limestone or dolomite. In preferred applications of the method, the inorganic sodium compound has a concentration of between 0.05 to 1 percent of the limestone or dolomite.

Process for enhancing the sulfur capture capability of an alkaline earth material

A control system particularly suited for effecting control over an integrated gasification combined cycle system (IGCC) that includes at least a fuel feed system, a gasifier system, a product gas cleanup system, a booster compressor and a gas turbine. The subject control system includes a bleed air control valve, a booster compressor bypass control valve, a fuel feed control valve and a product gas shutoff valve. The bleed air control valve, which is connected in fluid flow relation between the gas turbine and the booster compressor of the IGCC, is operable for effecting control over the amount of air that is bled in the IGCC. The booster compressor bypass control valve, which is connected in fluid flow relation between the upstream side and the downstream side of the IGCC, is operable for effecting the bypass of air around the booster compressor of the IGCC. The fuel feed control valve, which is connected in fluid flow relation between the fuel feed system and the gasifier system of the IGCC, is operable for effecting control over the amount of fuel that is fed from the fuel feed system of the IGCC. The product gas shutoff valve, which is connected in fluid flow relation between the product gas cleanup system and the gas turbine of the IGCC, is operable for shutting off the flow of product gas to the gas turbine of the IGCC.

Control system for IGCC's

A high performance, multi-stage, pressurized, airblown, entrained flow coal gasifier system and a method of operating such a gasifier system for generating therewithin fuel gas from coal. The subject gasifier system includes an outer, pressure containing vessel surrounding an inner, water-cooled vessel wherein the gasification reaction, through which the fuel gas is generated from coal, takes place. The inner, water-cooled vessel embodies a first stage within which the high temperatures required for the gasification reactions to take place as well as for slagging are generated from the combustion of char, a second stage within which the char is gasified to generate the subject fuel gas, and a third stage within which coal is devolatilized to produce the char for the first stage and the second stage and with a concomitant quenching being effected of the fuel gas as the latter flows through the third stage of the inner water-cooled vessel.

High performance, multi-stage, pressurized, airblown, entrained flow

A temperature measuring device for a gasifier of a gasifier system wherein the gasifier has a through opening formed thereon. The temperature measuring device includes a slag shield mounted on the gasifier so that a portion of the slag shield extends into the interior of the gasifier through the opening with which the gasifier is provided for this purpose, and a temperature measuring instrument mounted in supported relation within the slag shield so that a line-of-sight exists from the temperature measuring instrument into the interior of the gasifier whereat the temperature is desired to be measured. The slag shield is designed to protect the temperature measuring instrument from the slag flow within the gasifier. The temperature measuring instrument further includes cooling means for cooling at least that portion of the slag shield that extends into the interior of the gasifier, and purge gas means for supplying a flow of purge gas in surrounding relation to the temperature measuring instrument to purge particulate matter therefrom in order to ensure that the line-of-sight between the temperature measuring instrument and the interior of the gasifier remains unobscured.
