A device for cutting and turning a piped opening in a cloth workpiece which includes a main piece of cloth and a cloth strip sewed to it. The workpiece has a slit, and corner cuts are formed at the slit ends by corner knives with the workpiece lying on a support plate. Turning tools are introduced into the slit at positions located spaced from the corner cuts. The turning tools are then moved apart toward positions located closer to the corner cuts and thereupon lowered, so as to turn the piped opening. Inserting devices may be provided for initially pushing at least part of the workpiece into the slit before being engaged by the turning tools. An orienting device furthermore may orient the workpiece at an acute angle or perpendicular to the support plate for being engaged by the turning tools.

Apparatus for cutting and turning piped openings in cloth workpieces

A method and sewing unit for folding a strip of cloth and then transporting it to a sewing machine together with a sewing material blank to which it is to be sewn. In accordance with this invention, the sewing material blank 109, which has been laid out in accordance with markings at a layout point 101 of the sewing unit, together with the strip of cloth 110, are transferred by a feed device 8 to a transfer point 106 beneath the sewing-material holder 9, which has previously been raised. A pivotable and displaceable folding-plate 94 provided on the sewing-material holder, together with a counterplate 54 of the feed device 8, carries out the folding of the strip of cloth 110. Then the folding-plate 94 is pulled forward and the counterplate 54 backward, and the feed device 8 is placed in its raised position. The sewing-material holder 9 moves the folded strip of cloth 110 and the blank 109 lying under it to the sewing point 108 at the sewing machine 3. The feed device 8 is now on its way back to its starting position in the region of the layout place 101.

Method and sewing unit having means for folding a strip of material

A thread guide is used in combination with a standard sewing machine having a work table and a fabric feed for displacing a workpiece to be sewn on the table in a predetermined forward longitudinal direction through a sewing station on the table. The fabric guide comprises a transversely elastically deformable band extending generally in the workpiece-displacement direction and oriented on edge and holders engaging the band at a plurality of longitudinally offset locations for securing the band on the table with each of the locations in any of a multiplicity of transversely offset positions. Thus the band can be deformed into and held in a nonstraight shape. The guide further has a carriage displaceable on the table along the guide and provided with a clip fastenable on the workpiece, and a counterweight urging the carriage and clip longitudinally in a backward longitudinal direction opposite the forward longitudinal direction. The band is a ribbon of flexible spring steel that is longitudinally substantially inextensible and that is only deformable transversely to its plane.

Workpiece guide for automatic sewing machine

A workpiece guide device for sewing machines, especially for the edge-true seaming of at least two workpiece (fabric) pieces, e.g. trouser parts, on a sewing machine, comprises a vertically disposed linear-guide element on the sewing table for alignment of the edges of the pieces to be guided horizontally, and a three-plate stack extending generally transversely to the plane of the linear edge guide and mounted upon a slide for movement toward and away from the stitching location. Preferably clamping means is provided to engage the fabric pieces between the plates.
