A friction stir welding tool includes a rotation-symmetrical shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a pin, which is arranged concentrically about the rotation axis and which has a smaller diameter than the shaft at the proximal end thereof, and thus projects as compared to a shoulder region of the shaft. The shaft, at least in the shoulder region, and the pin each consists of a high-temperature-resistant metal or an alloy thereof. The pin and/or the shaft in the shoulder region consist of or are coated by a composite material, which substantially consists of molybdenum, tungsten, niobium or tantalum or an alloy of at least one of these metals, and a reinforcement phase embedded therein and consisting of at least one material having a Mohs hardness &#x3e;6, a micrometer particle size, and a free enthalpy of formation at 1300 K of less than &#x2212;350 kJ/mol O.

Friction stir welding tool

A tool for machining materials has a main part and one or more blades. The main part is made of a low-alloy steel. The socket is welded to the main part, and the blade edges are made of a hard metal. The hard metal contains at least 82 vol. % of tungsten carbide and a metallic binder made of a cobalt-nickel-based alloy. The hardness of the hard metal is greater than 1350 HV10. The socket has a sintered composite, and 40 vol. % to 60 vol. % of the composite is composed of a metal carbide and a metallic binder. At least 95 vol. % of the metallic binder is made of nickel, and the hardness of the composite is less than 800 HV10.

An iron-carbon master alloy is described, with a C content of 0.3 to 8 wt % and an upper limit of alloying metals Ni&#x3c;10 wt %, P&#x3c;4 wt %, Cr&#x3c;5 wt %, preferably&#x3c;1 wt %, Mn&#x3c;5 wt %, preferably&#x3c;1 wt %, Mo&#x3c;3 wt %, W&#x3c;3 wt %, Cu&#x3c;1 wt %, a particle size of &#x3e;20 &#x3bc;m and a hardness of &#x3c;350 HV 0.01, and a method for the manufacture of said master alloy.

Iron-carbon master alloy

A composite tool comprising a supporting part of a metallic material having a first composition and a working part of a metallic material having a second composition which is different from the first composition, a process for the manufacture thereof and a method of cutting an austentic alloy article with this composite tool. The supporting part of the composite tool is made of a tenacious iron-based material, and the working part is made of a precipitation harden iron-cobalt-tungsten alloy. The parts are joined by a metallic connection.
