An apparatus which cleans a moving imaging surface with a cleaning blade and automatically detects a failure of the cleaning blade. A failure sensing mechanism detects the cleaning blade failure and activates a blade indexing mechanism. The indexing mechanism removes the failed cleaning blade and positions a new cleaning blade in a wiping or doctoring mode frictional contact with the imaging surface for cleaning. A brush positioned upstream of the cleaning blade, in the direction of movement of the imaging surface, disturbs the particles thereon.

High reliability blade cleaner system

A surface layer on an imaging member has a surface roughness which reduces the force necessary for blade cleaning, reduces blade edge truck, reduces blade/substrate friction, inhibits the formation of toner-type deposits on the imaging surface, and/or reduces or eliminates light interference patterns resulting from coherent light, for example, from a raster output scanner.

Overcoat for imaging members

An apparatus for cleaning an imaging member has a blade holder and a blade made of a polyurethane elastomer obtained by the reaction of a polytetramethylene ether glycol having the formula HO[(CH.sub.2).sub.4 O].sub.n H where n is from 10 to 60, preferably 55 to 60, and from about 20 to about 95 parts preferably 22 to 26 parts, by weight per 100 parts by weight of said glycol of a diisocyanate selected from the group consisting of diphenylmethane diisocyanates, toluene diisocyanates, naphthalene diisocyanates and blends thereof and a sufficient amount of cross linking agents to provide a crosslinked elastomer, said cross linking agents comprising a mixture of from about 75% to 60% by weight of a diol having the formula HO(R.sub.1)OH where R.sub.1 is a straight or branched chain alkyl group having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms and from about 25% to 40% by weight of a triol having the formula: R'--C--[(OH).sub.a (CH.sub.2 OH).sub.b ] where R' is H, CH.sub.3 or C.sub.2 H.sub.5, a is 0 or 1, b is 2 or 3 and a+b=3.

Cleaning apparatus made of polyurethane

A cleaning blade which is made from a thermoplastic material having a compounded additive for lubrication. The cleaning blade is used in an electrophotographic printing machine to remove residual particles from a photoconductive surface.

Internally lubricated cleaning blade

A cleaning blade which is made from a material having a fibrous material randomly oriented throughout the material to prevent defect propagation. The cleaning blade is used in an electrophotographic printing device to remove residual particles from a photoconductive surface.

Damage resistant cleaning blade

A cleaning blade is provided incorporating fiber fillers oriented in a single direction in an elastomeric matrix. In use, the cleaning blade is mounted for cleaning operation in a manner orienting the fiber fillers generally parallel to process direction. The material thereby provided is resistant to damage, and is relatively stiff in the process direction, while relatively conformable in the lateral direction.

Fiber reinforced cleaning blade

A coating process for the manufacture of cleaning blades is used where a hardened material coating is electro-deposited onto a carbon steel cleaning blade. The coating process is selected to provided a microporous surface. The pores thus produced are enlarged. The surface is sealed with sub-micron size particles of fluorocarbons, heat treated to create a smooth, slippery surface, while the hardened metal coating provides wear resistance to friction encountered during cleaning operation.
