New and improved curable compositions useful as non-yellowing, acid resistant coatings for a variety of substrates and as adhesives and binders are disclosed. The curable compositions comprise a polymeric component comprising poly(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl acrylamidoglycolate) functional units and poly (active hydrogen) functional units and preferably an effective amount of a protic acid crosslinking catalyst. In preferred embodiments acid-catalyzed room temperature curable coating compositions are provided. The compositions may be cured effectively at lower temperatures without the use of amines or other toxic crosslinking agents and do not liberate formaldehyde on curing. A method for making poly(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl acrylamidoglycolate) functional polymers is also disclosed.

Polymeric curable compositions containing alkylacrylamidoglycolates

A low temperature crosslinkable emulsion is provided that includes an emulsified, crosslinkable polymer containing repeating units derived from a certain activated ester-containing vinyl monomer, and further includes a crosslinking agent having a plurality of functional groups each capable at low temperature of reacting with the activated ester groups, upon coalescence of micelles of the emulsion. Also provided is a crosslinked coating obtained by curing the emulsion.

An improved process for synthesizing a sterically unhindered trifunctional primary amine is provided. This process includes the steps of slowly adding a particular unsaturated diester to a solution of a certain diamine in an aromatic organic solvent, and recovering the desired compound. The trifunctional primary amine is useful as a crosslinking agent.

In the emulsion polymerization of polymers which comprise monomers selected from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, alkyl esters of those acids and which may also comprise other compatible vinyl monomers such as styrene, vinyl acetate, N-methylolacrylamide, acrylonitrile, itaconic acid and the like, the emulsifier for the emulsion polymerization is a surface-active agent having the formula ##STR1## wherein ##STR2## is the acyl radical of a fatty acid having 7 to 21 carbon atoms and M is selected from ammonium, the alkali metals, and certain alkaline earth metals, and x is 1 to 3.

For use as an emusifier for emulsion polymerization of acrylate monomer mixtures, there is provided a novel mixture of soluble salts of sulfosuccinate half esters of two or three alcohols, each selected from a different class defined and each respective half ester being present in a defined range of proportions in the mixture. The defined emulsifiers, even when used at concentrations less than usual for emulsion polymerization, produce acrylate latex products having a favorable combination of several advantageous properties, particularly good mechanical stability and low viscosity, even when a cross-linking monomer is included in the monomer mixture to be polymerized.
