Compounds of the general formula I ##STR1## where R is hydroxyl or unsubstituted or substituted amino, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, X.sup.1 and Y.sup.1 independently of one another are each a carboxylic acid ester or ether group and X.sup.2 and Y.sup.2 independently of one another are each hydrogen, nitro or chlorine, are very useful for coloring petroleum products, solvents and engine fuel additives.

Disazo dyes

Benzaldehydes are reacted with cyanoacetaldehyde, for which reaction the cyanoacetaldehyde can be produced from isoxazole in a basic medium. The reaction gives .alpha.-cyanocinnamaldehydes, the hydrogenation of which gives the corresponding dihydrocinnamyl compounds, which can be converted to 2,4-diaminopyrimidines by reaction with guanidine, using various methods.

Preparation of .alpha.-cyanocinnamaldehydes

The invention relates to a process for the production of anthraquinone by catalytic oxidation of indans or diphenylmethane derivatives with oxygen in the presence of a vanadium (V) compound with or without one or more than one compund of potassium, boron, thallium, antimony and/or caesium. Anthraquinone which can be prepared by the process according to this invention is a valuable starting material for the production of dyes and pesticides.
