A transport system for conveying sheet material along a feed path. The transport system includes an electro-dynamic propulsion system for moving sheet material, or a stacked collation of sheet material, along a support deck which defines the feed path. More specifically, the electro-dynamic propulsion system includes at least one guideway and a ferromagnetic element disposed internally of the guideway. The guideway includes a magnetic coil to produce a variable magnetic field. By varying the flux density and polarity of the magnetic field the ferromagnetic element may be propelled within the guideway. An abutment member is coupled to the ferromagnetic element, extends through the elongate opening of the support deck and engages an edge of sheet material. A processor is operative to control the electro-dynamic propulsion system and, accordingly, the rate of travel and position of the sheet material along the feed path.

Electrodynamic propulsion system for conveying sheet material

A compliant conveyance system including a diverter having at least one sidewall structure defining an internal chamber in fluid communication with a pressure source. The sidewall structure includes a compliant interface surface for conveying sheet material along the feed path and a plurality of orifices effecting fluid communication between the compliant interface surface and the internal chamber. A means is provided for developing a pressure differential across the sheet material through the orifices to urge an interface surface of the sheet material against the compliant interface surface of the diverter such that the compliant interface surface conforms to the sheet material interface surface. The system employs a means for driving the diverter about a rotational axis from a first to a second rotational position and a controller for controlling the pressure differential such that, in the first rotation position, the sheet material is secured against the compliant interface surface and, in the second rotational position, the sheet material is released therefrom.

Compliant conveyance system for mailpiece transport along an arcuate feed path

A sortation bin module having a conveyor and diverter module for pneumatically securing, releasing and diverting selected mailpieces to a bank of sortation bins. The conveyor module includes a conveyor surface for transporting sheet material along the feed path and a pneumatic system for developing a pressure differential across the conveyor surface to hold the sheet material on the conveyor surface during transport. The diverter module includes a diverter surface for sorting sheet material from the conveyor surface, i.e., diverting sheet material from the feed path. The diverter module, furthermore, includes a pneumatic system for developing a pressure differential across the diverter surface to hold the sheet material on the diverter surface during sortation. The conveyor and diverter surfaces are also arranged such that the surfaces oppose each other to define a transfer interface. Moreover, the bin module includes a processor operative to independently control the pressure differential of the conveyor and diverter modules such that sheet material is held against the respective conveyor and diverter surfaces by a negative pressure differential and transferred from the conveyor to the diverter surface by controlling the pressure differential of the modules when the sheet material is interposed at the transfer interface.

Sheet material sorter and pneumatic conveyance/diverting system therefor

A system for tracking the spatial position/motion of an article conveyed along a feed path. The system comprises a reflective surface disposed along the feed path of the article and an optical scanning device disposed remotely from the reflective surface such that the moving article is interposed therebetween. The optical scanning device is operative to (i) transmit light energy along a length of the reflective surface, (ii) receive light energy returned from the reflective surface and (iii) determine the spatial position of the article based upon a condition of the optical path, i.e., whether the optical path is present or interrupted. A break in the optical path is sensed by the optical scanning device and interpreted by the signal processor to determine the spatial position/motion of the moving article.

Optical position/motion tracking system

The invention pertains to a mailpiece weight measuring apparatus for use with a high speed automatic mailpiece processing system. The weight measuring apparatus measures the inertial mass of the mailpiece as the weight equivalent. The apparatus includes a device for determining a first velocity of a mailpiece, a device for imparting a force to the mailpiece in a direction co-linear with the first velocity so that the mailpiece exits said force impacting device at a second velocity, a device for determining the second velocity of the mailpiece, a device for determining a change in a parameter proportional to the force imparted on the mailpiece, and a device for determining the weight of the mailpiece based upon the determined first velocity, second velocity and change in the parameter.
