This is a method for the preparation of polyurethane/acrylic-or-vinyl latexes for use in waterborne adhesives or coatings in which the urethane polymer component has no urea linkages. A fully reacted emulsifiable polyurethane is prepared in an acrylic or vinyl monomer, which acts as the solvent or diluent for the polyurethane. The monomer and polyurethane are then coemulsified, free radical initiators are added, and a regular acrylic or vinyl addition polymerization is carried out.

Process for preparing urethane/acrylic-or-vinyl latexes

The addition to urethane prepolymers of low molecular weight polymers formed from ethylenically unsaturated monomers which do not contain active hydrogen provides a hot melt adhesive which can be readily coated at a viscosity of 3000 to 50,000 cps. at 120.degree.C. without the need for additional tackifiers or plasticizers and which has improved initial cohesive strength as well as improved strength after aging of the cured bond. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized in the non-isocyanate containing components of the isocyanate terminated prepolymer.

Arcylic modified reactive urethane hot melt adhesive compositions

A modified polyurethane adhesive composition characterized by its improved bond strength and curing properties contains an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer and from 2.5 to 100% by weight, based on the prepolymer, of a dicarbamate ester compatible with the prepolymer and containing two free isocyanate groups. The resultant adhesive is suitable for hot-melt applications in bonding flexible substrates.

Polyurethane adhesive compositions modified with a dicarbamate ester

Copolymerizable blocked isocyanate diols are prepared by reacting a blocking agent with an isocyanate group of an organic diisocyanate under controlled conditions, thereby forming a blocked isocyanate group, and reacting the second isocyanate group in a subsequent step with the amine portion of a selected amine diol under anhydrous conditions. The resultant products are used to prepare self-crosslinkable, linear polyurethanes of high molecular weight.

Blocked isocyanate diols and preparation thereof

A modified polyurethane adhesive composition characterized by its improved viscosity and high initial bond strength contains an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer or a fully reacted polyurethane and a carbamate ester which is compatible and not reactive with the prepolymer or polyurethane. The resultant adhesive is suitable for laminating many types of substrates. In a preferred embodiment the prepolymer is employed with the carbamate ester in a reactive hot-melt adhesive for use in bonding flexible substrates.

Modified polyurethane adhesive compositions containing a carbamate ester

Stable polyurethane polymer latices are obtained by incorporating specified amounts of polyethylene glycol into the backbone of various polyurethane polymers. The polyurethane latices are non-ionic but can assume an anionic or cationic character by the addition of anionic or cationic emulsifying or surface active agents. The latices have wide utility, for example, as adhesives, coatings, textile sizes, binders, and in molding applications.
