Protective barriers for protecting assets (e.g., electrical power transformers and other substation components). The protective barrier may include a lower portion and an upper portion. The lower portion may include first and second laterally spaced A-frame structures having a first protective member assembly extending between aligned legs of the respective A-frame structures on one side thereof. The first protective member assembly may include a first plurality of substantially horizontally extending protective members oriented at an angle relative to a horizontal plane. The first and second A-frame structures may have a second protective member assembly extending between aligned legs of the respective A-frame structures on an opposing side thereof. The upper portion may comprise a third protective member assembly. Methods of making a protective barrier are also disclosed.

Protective barriers and related methods

Methods of making bainitic steels may involve austenitizing a quantity of steel by exposing the quantity of steel to a first temperature. A composition of the quantity of steel may be configured to impede formation of non-bainite ferrite, pearlite, and Widmanst&#xe4;tten ferrite. The quantity of steel may be heat-treated to form bainite by exposing the quantity of steel to a second, lower temperature. The second, lower temperature may be stabilized by exposing the quantity of steel to the second, lower temperature in the presence of a thermal ballast.

Methods of making bainitic steel materials

The invention includes methods of forming an aluminum oxynitride-comprising body. For example, a mixture is formed which comprises A:B:C in a respective molar ratio in the range of 9:3.6-6.2:0.1-1.1, where 'A' is AlO, 'B' is AlN, and &#x201c;C&#x201d; is a total of one or more of BO, SiO, Si&#x2014;Al&#x2014;O&#x2014;N, and TiO. The mixture is sintered at a temperature of at least 1,600&#xb0; C. at a pressure of no greater than 500 psia effective to form an aluminum oxynitride-comprising body which is at least internally transparent and has at least 99% maximum theoretical density.

An armor structure includes first and second layers individually containing a plurality of i-beams. Individual i-beams have a pair of longitudinal flanges interconnected by a longitudinal crosspiece and defining opposing longitudinal channels between the pair of flanges. The i-beams within individual of the first and second layers run parallel. The laterally outermost faces of the flanges of adjacent i-beams face one another. One of the longitudinal channels in each of the first and second layers faces one of the longitudinal channels in the other of the first and second layers. The channels of the first layer run parallel with the channels of the second layer. The flanges of the first and second layers overlap with the crosspieces of the other of the first and second layers, and portions of said flanges are received within the facing channels of the i-beams of the other of the first and second layers.
