An electronic safety system for preventing vehicle damage during the disconnection of a pulling portion of a vehicle from its towed portion, such as a trailer, has been disclosed. The safety system monitors a series of safety conditions on the pulling portion and optionally on the towed portion of the vehicle. When the safety conditions are met, the coupler, such as a fifth wheel or ball hitch, disconnect function is enabled. When the safety conditions are not met, the coupler disconnect function is disabled and, optionally, the vehicle operator is alerted to the unsafe configuration of the vehicle.

Vehicle safety system, and components therefor

A portable laser emitter, laser target, and method for measuring the toe angle of a commercial truck steer axle are disclosed. The laser emitter is mounted to the wheel of a truck steer axle while the laser target is placed in front of the truck. Measurements are taken of the laser dot position on the target with the emitter mounted at either end of the steer axle. The process is then repeated with the target positioned behind the truck. The measurements taken from either end of the steer axle with both front and rear target positions are compared to determine the toe angle of the steer axle.

The laser emitter is mounted to the wheel of a truck drive axle while the laser targets are mounted to the truck's steer wheels. The measurements taken from either end of the axle are compared to determine the angle of the drive axle. This method may also be applied to a commercial trailer by using a floor standing laser target centered on the trailer king pin.

Portable axle alignment apparatus and method

A method for securely transferring a master key from a host to a terminal, such as an automated teller machine, is disclosed. Each of the host and terminal is initialized with a certificate, signed by a certificate authority, and containing a public key used in used in connection with public key infrastructure communication schemes. An identifier of an authorized host is stored in the terminal. Upon receiving a communication from a host including a host certificate, the terminal validates whether it is already bound to a host, if not, whether the host identifier of the remote host matches the preloaded authorized host identifier, before further communicating with the remote host, including the exchange of certificates. In this way, the terminal is protected against attacks or intruders. Following the exchange of certificates, the host may securely transfer the master key to the terminal in a message encrypted under the terminal's public key. The terminal may decrypt the message, including the master key, using its corresponding secret key.
