A new family of viscosification agents based on sulfonated ionomers is described for oil-based drilling muds. The resultant muds display good viscosity characteristics and good stability when formulated from ionomers having an appropriate sulfonate level, cation type, and cosolvent content.

The present invention relates to a process for the forming of a powder composition of a sulfonated polymer, wherein the powder has a volume density of about 15 to about 30 pounds/cubic foot and a water content of less than 2 wt. % wherein the polymer is selected from neutralized sulfonated elastomeric and thermoplastic polymers.

Process for forming powders from ion containing polymers

The present invention relates to a process for forming a polymeric solution or gel having a viscosity of at least about 50,000 cps which includes the steps forming a solvent system of an organic liquid and a polar cosolvent, the polar cosolvent being less than about 15 wt. % of the solvent system, a viscosity of the solvent system being less than about 1000 cps; dissolving to form a solution, a concentration of the neutralized sulfonated polymer in the solution being about 0.1 to about 20 wt. %, a viscosity of the solution being less than about 20,000 cps; and admixing or contacting said solution with about 5 to about 500 vol. % water, the water being immiscible with the solution and the polar cosolvent transferring from the solution phase to the water phase thereby causing the viscosity of said solution to increase rapidly from less to 20,000 cps to greater than 50,000 cps.

Process for polymeric gelation

This invention relates to pressure sensitive adhesive compositions which include an amine terminated polyalkylene oxide neutralized sulfonated thermoplastic polymer, wherein the neutralized sulfonated thermoplastic polymer has about 5 to about 250 meq. of neutralized sulfonate groups per 100 grams of the neutralized sulfonated thermoplastic polymer, dissolved in a nonreactive solvent at a concentration level of about 5 grams to about 25 grams per 100 ml. of nonreactive solvent. To control the end use properties of the solvent-based pressure-sensitive formulations, optionally, tackifying resins can also be incorporated in the solution.

This invention relates to hot melt adhesive compositions which include a neutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer, wherein the neutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer has about 10 to about 100 meq. of neutralized sulfonate groups per 100 grams of the neutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer, and about 25 to about 200 parts by weight of a hydrocarbon resin of a petroleum or coal tar distillate, aliphatic dienes and mono- and di-olefins, cyclic olefins of 5 to 6 carbon atoms and hydrogenated poly cyclics per 100 parts by weight of the neutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer. The hot melt adhesive composition can further include an unsaturated hydrocarbon resin such as polyisoprene.

Process for controlled gelation of polymeric solution (C-971)

This invention relates to hot melt adhesive compositions which includes a neutralized sulfonated polystyrene resin wherein the neutralized sulfonated polystyrene resin has about 5 to about 250 meq. of neutralized sulfonate groups per 100 grams of the neutralized sulfonated polystyrene resin and about 25 to about 250 parts by weight of a hydrocarbon resin of a petroleum or coal tar distillate, aliphatic dienes and mono and diolefins, cyclic olefins of 5 or 6 carbon atoms and hydrogenated poly cyclics per 100 parts by weight of the neutralized sulfonated polystyrene resin. Additionally, an unsaturated hydrocarbon polymer such as polyisoprene and polybutadiene can be incorporated into the adhesive compositions.

This invention relates to a process for the formation of a neutralized sulfonated polymer having about 10 to about 60 meq. sulfonate groups, wherein the sulfonate groups are neutralized with a barium counterion. A cement of a polymer having olefinic functional groups and a non-reactive solvent is contacted with a sulfonating agent such as an acyl sulfate. After terminating the sulfonation reaction by quenching with methanol, the sulfonated polymer is then neutralized with a solution of barium hydroxide, barium acetate or barium carboxylate dissolved in a carboxylic acid having about 1 to about 4 carbon atoms or a combination solvent of methanol and a carboxylic acid. A carboxylic acid having at least about 10 carbon atoms can be then added to the cement of the neutralized sulfonated polymer thereby forming a barium salt of the carboxylic acid having at least about 10 carbon atoms in situ, wherein the barium salt of the carboxylic acid having at least about 10 carbon atoms is a preferential plasticizer for the zinc sulfonate groups. The Brookfield viscosity at 3.0 rpm at room temperature of the cement of the barium neutralized sulfonated polymer is less than about 50,000 cps.

The present invention relates to a process for forming a polymeric solution or gel having a viscosity of at least about 50,000 cps which includes the steps of dissolving an amine neutralized sulfonated polymer in a solvent to form a polymeric solution, a concentration of the amine neutralized sulfonated polymer in the solution being about 0.1 to about 20 wt. %, a viscosity of the solution being less than about 20,000 cps; and adding about 1 to about 500 vol. % of an inorganic base solution to the polymeric solution having a viscosity less than about 20,000 cps, the water of the inorganic base solution being immiscible with the solvent and the polymeric solution, the viscosity of said polymeric solution increasing rapidly upon the addition of said inorganic base solution from less than 20,000 cps to greater than 50,000 cps.

A process for forming a powdered EPDM terpolymer, wherein the powder of said EPDM terpolymer has a volume density of about 10 to about 30 lb/ft.sup.3 which includes the steps of adding a cement of an EPDM terpolymer in a hydrocarbon solvent to water, a volume ratio of the water to the cement being about 60 to 1 to about 2 to 1; emulsify under high-shear the blend of the water and the cement thereby forming a dispersion of particles of the EPDM terpolymer in the water; steam stripping under high agitation the emulsified blend of the EPDM terpolymer, the water and the solvent thereby removing the solvent from the emulsified blend; filtering the dispersion of the particles of the EPDM terpolymer in the water to recover a wet powder of the EPDM terpolymer; and hot-air drying the wet powder of the EPDM terpolymer in a fluid-bed dryer.
