A circuit breaker having a trip unit includes a lock out assembly positioned adjacent the trip unit for controlling access thereto. The lock out assembly includes a base member, a cover member and a slide member received therebetween. The slide member is moveable between various positions for controlling access to settings for the various operating parameters of the circuit breaker as provided by the trip unit.

A molded case circuit breaker has modular crossbar members which connect the contact arm carriers of a desired number of poles for opening and closing the separable contacts of all of the poles simultaneously by a single spring powered operating mechanism. The modular crossbar members comprise shaft sections which engage openings in the contact arm carriers of adjacent poles. Bearings support the shaft sections and mount the contact arm carriers for rotation about a common pivot axis. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the modular crossbar member is a single continuous metal shaft overmolded with an electrically insulative resin which also forms the bearing. Alternatively, separate metal shaft sections seat in sockets on either side of the molded bearing. In both instances, the shaft sections are keyed to the openings in the contact arm carriers for transmission of torque. In the exemplary crossbars, the shaft sections are hexagonal in cross-section.

A molded case circuit breaker has a moving conductor assembly which includes a modular carrier assembly incorporating a plurality of spring biased contact cam members each of which engages contact pressure lobes on a pair of contact arm laminations to provide contact pressure. In response to the magnetic repulsion forces generated by a short circuit, the springs compress allowing the cam members to pivot and side step the contact pressure lobes so that the contact arm blows-open with little resistance. The cam members and springs are preassembled in a transverse channel in the carrier body and laterally retained in place by side plates for easier pivotal attachment of the contact arm laminations to the lobes on the side plates. The side plate lobes raise the contact arm relative to the mass of the carrier to reduce eddy current heating and provide a positive off indication for welded contacts by restricting movement of lower toggle links of the operating mechanism which are coplanar with the side plates. A modular crossbar includes molded bearings engaged by or made integral with hexagonal metal shaft sections which extend into hex openings in the carrier bodies of adjacent poles.

The helical contact compression springs of a circuit breaker are preassembled in a contact clip for easier assembly of the circuit breaker. The bottom wall of an elongated trough formed by the clip is pierced by holes forming cylindrical protrusions extending into the trough. The clip is placed over the springs supported in a row in a fixture. A die head presses on the spring clip to compress all the springs and then simultaneously insert punches into the holes in the clip to expand the protrusions and secure the springs to the clip. The fixture includes a slide mounted on guides for movement between a loading position and an operating position under the die head. A support block is pivoted on the slide to present one of two sets of spring recesses for circuit breakers having different current ratings with the slide in the loading position.

The movable contact arms of a circuit breaker are latched in the blow open position to prevent rebound and possible restrike of the arc in response to the very high magnetic repulsion forces generated by a short circuit in the protected electrical system. Each movable contact arm is mounted on a secondary carrier coupled to a main carrier by a spring loaded cam mechanism which allows the movable contact arm to blow open before the main carrier is rotated to the open position by the spring driven circuit breaker operating mechanism. In one embodiment of the invention, the movable contact arm is latched in the blow open position by a latching detent in the cam surface of the cam mechanism. In a preferred embodiment, the secondary carrier is latched by a detent formed by a leaf spring cantilevered from a fixed support. Subsequent rotation of the main carrier by the operating mechanism releases the latch by rotating the secondary carrier clear of the detent formed by the leaf spring.

A pair of lock links straddling and pivoted on the same pin as the latchable cradle of a circuit breaker follow the toggle device of the breaker either by riding on the toggle knee pin or through a pin which bears against the edges of the toggle arms. The lock links have extensions which engage the handle yoke to prevent the handle from being moved to the off position when the circuit breaker contacts are welded closed causing the toggle device to remain erected.

A drawout and interlock assembly for manually inserting a low-voltage molded case circuit breaker into positive electrical engagement with the plug-in power terminals of a distribution switchboard panel and then withdraw the breaker into a disconnected-test position is disclosed. The drawout position of the assembly comprises a pair of guide rails and a pair of drive rails that are secured to the back of the circuit breaker housing and cooperate with a pair of support rails and a drive mechanism that are secured to the stationary power blocks of the switchboard panel to effect a sliding telescopic interfitting of parts that permits the circuit breaker to be manually racked into connected and disconnected-test positions in an efficient reliable manner with a minimum number of parts. Automatic tripping of the breaker before it is connected to or disconnected from the switchboard panel is achieved by a toggle-actuated interlock lever that engages a depressable interlock button on the back of the circuit breaker housing when the drive mechanism is moved by an operating handle.

Phase reversal switch apparatus for a three-phase high-current isolated phase bus circuit includes a non-reversing phase switch, and two groups of two reversing phase switches. The apparatus also includes a phase reversal mechanism having a rotatable operating shaft with a drive lever, a non-reversing lever, and two reversing levers coupled thereto. Locking and drive couplings are selectively engaged with the levers and operated by a shift actuator and a switch actuator to selectively operate the non-reversing switch and the first and second reversing switches to effect a phase sequence reversing operation in a secure and efficient manner.
