A process is presented for the removal of contaminants like sulfur compounds from hydrocarbons. The sulfur compounds are removed from hydrocarbons that may be a feed to cracking units. A feed stream is treated with a clinoptilolite or a barium exchanged zeolite adsorbent to effectively remove carbon disulfides from the feed hydrocarbon. The adsorbent may be regenerated by a hydrogen stream, a hydrocarbon stream or a mixture thereof.

Process for removing sulfur compounds from hydrocarbon streams

Process and apparatuses for purifying a feed stream containing COand predominantly hydrogen are provided. In an embodiment, the process includes passing the feed stream through a multilayer adsorbent bed comprising a first adsorbent section, a second adsorbent section downstream from the first adsorbent section and a third adsorbent section downstream from the second adsorbent section. The first adsorbent section comprises an activated carbon layer, the second adsorbent section comprises a layer of molecular sieve of the faujasite structure type with a Si/Al atomic ratio of from 1.5 to 8.0 and the third adsorbent section comprises a layer of molecular sieve of the faujasite structure type with a Si/Al atomic ratio of from 1.0 to 1.5. At least one of N, CO, CHand CO is adsorbed from the feed stream and a purified hydrogen product is recovered from the multilayer adsorbent bed.

Pressure swing adsorption process and apparatus for purifying a hydrogen-containing gas stream

The invention relates to a process for removing and recovering mercury, an impurity, from a hydrocarbon feedstream containing oxygen, such as introduced during hydraulic fracturing. Mercury is selectively removed to very low levels of concentration from fluid streams such as natural gas, cracked gas, hydrogen or naphtha by passage of the stream through an adsorbent bed containing particles of a zeolitic molecular sieve preferably having pore diameters of at least 3.0 angstroms and in which the zeolite crystallites are formed into an aggregate (cylindrical or beads) which contain ionic or elemental silver. These adsorbent particles maintain their capacity for removal of mercury despite the presence of oxygen.

Process for the removal of mercury from hydrocarbon streams containing oxygen

Embodiments of methods and apparatuses for treating a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream are provided. The method comprises the steps of contacting the hydrocarbon-containing feed stream comprising C, C, C, and/or Chydrocarbons, water, and contaminants with a Linde Type A molecular sieve at dehydration conditions effective to remove water and form a dehydrated feed stream. The contaminants comprise oxygenates, sulfur compounds, or combinations thereof. The dehydrated feed stream is contacted with a sodium faujisite molecular sieve having a silica/alumina molar ratio of from about 2 to about 2.5 at absorption conditions effective to remove the contaminants and form a dehydrated contaminant-depleted feed stream.

Methods and apparatuses for treating a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream

Processes and apparatuses are provided for preparing liquified natural gas from a natural gas feed that comprises C5 to C7 hydrocarbons and C8 or greater hydrocarbons. An exemplary process includes effecting the preferential adsorption of the C8 or greater hydrocarbons from the natural gas feed over adsorption of hydrocarbons having less than 8 carbon atoms to provide a C8-depleted natural gas stream. The process continues with effecting the preferential adsorption of the C5 to C7 hydrocarbons from the C8-depleted natural gas stream over adsorption of hydrocarbons having less than 5 carbon atoms to form a C5 to C8-depleted natural gas stream. The C5 to C7 hydrocarbons are preferentially adsorbed with higher selectivity and capacity than adsorption of the C5 to C7 hydrocarbons during preferentially adsorbing the C8 or greater hydrocarbons. The C5 to C8-depleted natural gas stream is then liquified.

A process for removal of trace impurities of hydrides of arsenic, phosphorus, antimony, silicon, and boron and sulfur and oxygenates and compounds containing these impurities from a hydrocarbon stream comprising contacting the hydrocarbon stream with an adsorbent material selected from the group consisting of zeolites and promoted alumina to adsorb compounds containing sulfur and/or oxygenates, contacting the hydrocarbon stream with an adsorbent material comprising one or more active metal oxides to remove the hydrides and contacting the hydrocarbon stream with an adsorbent material that removes water.

Adsorbent beds for removal of hydrides from hydrocarbons

A process is provided for the removal of trace amounts of aromatic hydrocarbons from an acid waste gas feed stream comprising sulfur compounds and the aromatic hydrocarbons. An adsorption process employing an adsorbent such as a high silica zeolite adsorbent having a framework silica-to-alumina ratio greater than about 15 and having a pore size greater than about 6.2 angstroms is used to remove from the feed gas mixture aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants and permit the recovery of a high purity sulfur product from the treated effluent stream. The use of the present invention removes aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants which are responsible for the degeneration of the performance of the downstream sulfur recovery zone.

Sulfur production process

A process is provided for the removal of trace amount of aromatic hydrocarbons from a waste feed gas stream comprising sulfur compounds and the aromatic hydrocarbons. An adsorption process employing an adsorbent such as a high silica zeolite adsorbent having a framework silica to alumina ratio greater than about 15 and having a pore size greater than about 6.2 Angstroms is used to remove from the feed gas mixture aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants and permit the recovery of a high purity sulfur product from the treated effluent stream. The adsorption zone comprises at least 2 adsorption beds wherein one of the first adsorption beds is operating in an adsorption mode and the other is being regenerated at a desorption pressure higher than the adsorption pressure. The regeneration is performed in a closed system or partially closed system, and prior to returning a regenerated adsorption zone to adsorption conditions the waste feed gas stream is used to cool and purge the regenerated zone. Purge effluent from the regeneration zone is passed to a bed undergoing adsorption in a lead/trim configuration to prevent a slug of aromatic hydrocarbons from entering the adsorption effluent. The use of the present invention removes aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants which are responsible for the degeneration of the performance of the downstream sulfur recovery zone.

The present invention relates to a cyclic process for the preparation of ethyl tert.-alkyl ethers by the reaction of an alcohol, such as ethanol, with an iso-olefin such as isobutylene or isoamylene wherein an effluent from the reaction zone is first separated in a distillation column to provide an overhead effluent stream and a bottoms effluent stream comprising ethyl tert.-alkyl ether and unreacted ethanol, and the ether product is passed to an adsorption zone to remove the unreacted ethanol. When the reaction occurs in the presence of water, a tert. alcohol (e.g., TBA or TAA) is produced and, if returned to the reaction zone, the tertiary alcohol builds up in the process and reduces efficiency. An adsorbent selected from the group consisting of zeolite 13X, silica-bonded silicalite, an alkali-exchanged zeolite with an MFI structure having a silica/alumina ratio greater than 20 and mixtures thereof is employed in an adsorption zone to remove the unreacted ethanol from the ether product to provide ether product essentially free of ethanol and comprising the tertiary alcohol. Thus, the tertiary alcohol is removed with the ether product as a high octane, oxygenate blending component for reformulated gasoline with a low vapor pressure. The invention is useful in recovering unreacted ethanol from the other product stream and returning the unreacted ethanol to the reaction zone without returning TBA. The invention prevents the build-up of tertiary alcohol in the unreacted ethanol stream which adversely affects the operation of the reaction zone and reduces catalyst stability.

Process for the production of ethyl tert.-alkyl ethers

The present invention is a cyclic process for the preparation of ethyl tert.-alkyl ethers by the reaction of an alcohol, ethanol, with an iso-olefin such as isobutylene or isoamylene wherein an effluent from the reaction zone is separated in a distillation column to provide an overhead effluent stream and a bottoms effluent stream comprising ethyl tert.-alkyl ether and unreacted ethanol. The unreacted ethanol is recovered in an adsorption zone comprising a selective adsorbent selected from the group consisting of zeolite 13X, sodium zeolite Y, alumina, silicalite and mixtures thereof. The invention is useful in recovering unreacted ethanol from the bottoms effluent stream and returning the unreacted ethanol to the reaction zone. The invention reduces the cost of this separation which is complicated by the formation of an azeotrope between the unreacted alcohol and the ether.

The present invention relates to a process for the separation of ethanol from a mixture thereof with ethyl tert.-alkyl ether employing a selective adsorbent comprising a mixture of sodium zeolite Y in combination with alumina wherein the percentage of the sodium zeolite Y ranges between 10 and 40 wt-%. The invention reduces the cost of this separation which is complicated by an azeotrope formation between the alcohol and the ether.

Adsorbent for the separation of ethanol from ethyl tert.-alkyl ether

A process is disclosed for improving catalyst performance and yields in the manufacture of motor gasoline components. More particularly the process is directed to the removal of H.sub.2 S, sulfur compounds, trace amounts of acetonitrile or acetone or propionitrile from a hydrocarbon feedstock, comprising a C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 product fraction from a fluid catalytic cracking unit which may be used subsequently in an etherification process for the production of ethers such as MTBE and TAME and/or an alkylation process for the production of alkylate. The hydrocarbon feedstock is passed to an amine treating zone, a mercaptan sulfur removal zone and an adsorption zone for the removal of sulfur compounds, water and trace amounts of acetonitrile or acetone or propionitrile. The regeneration of the adsorption zone includes the contacting of the sorbent with a heated regenerant vapor stream. The spent regenerant vapor stream is condensed to provide a hydrocarbon phase and an aqueous phase. The trace amounts of the acetonitrile, acetone, and propionitrile are removed in the aqueous phase. The hydrocarbon phase is treated to remove sulfur compounds and can be recycled as the regenerant.
