Certain embodiments include materials that carry oxygen and emit molecular oxygen upon heating. The approach reported here uses thermal decomposition of organic endoperoxide compounds to produce singlet oxygen. In certain aspects the oxygen carrier comprises an organic compound either alone or contained in a polymeric carrier or other carrier material that is used to form a coating, layer, or bulk substance that can be a solid, a gel or a fluid. The oxygen-carrier is most conveniently prepared by oxidation of a precursor compound, the structure of which determines its thermal stability and thus how rapidly oxygen is released at any given temperature.

Oxygen generating biomaterial

Metal oxide nanoparticles having at least some surface acid sites functionalized with an adhesion promoter and at least some surface acid sites functionalized with a coupling agent. The nanoparticles are useful in forming composites comprising photopolymerizable matrix monomers, and are primarily suitable for dental and medical restoration. In a preferred embodiment, the metal oxide comprises zirconium, and the coupling agent is a zirconate.

Functionalized zirconium oxide particles

There are disclosed amphoteric nano-sized metal oxide particles functionalized with silyl esters of a phosphonate and composites thereof with an acrylate-based monomer, including liquid crystal monomers photopolymerizable at ambient temperature. Also disclosed are the method making such functionalized particular by reacting a metal oxide with a silyl ester of a phosphonate in the presence of a non-aqueous solvent and in an inert atmosphere and the method of making the composites wherein the functionalized particles are admixed with an acrylate-based matrix monomer, including liquid crystal monomers photopolymerizable at ambient temperature. Further disclosed is the method of dental repair wherein the composites are applied to a tooth and photopolymerized.

Metal oxide and metal oxide-silica nanoparticles are disclosed wherein the surfaces thereof are complexed with a polymerizable, biocompatible, heterocyclic base. Polymerizable compositions are prepared by loading such nanoparticles into acrylate based monomer matrices, which compositions can then be photocured into X-ray opaque, transparent or translucent solids. Methods are disclosed for forming such complexed nanoparticles and compositions and for using such compositions as medical or dental restoratives.

The nanoparticles are useful in composites comprising photopolymerizable alkene matrix monomers, and are primarily suitable for dental and medical restoration.

Mechanically strong and transparent or translucent composites made using zirconium oxide nanoparticles

An interpolymeric resin and composition therefrom is provided for treating teeth to prevent dental caries by forming a protective barrier and providing a source of fluoride ions for release adjacent to the surface of the tooth. The resin includes an anion-exchange-site bearing monomer carrying fluoride ions, an acrylic comonomer, a crosslinking monomer, and, optionally, a wetting/etching monomer. The resin may have a high degree of crosslinking which then may include filler material to form a composite composition.
