A surface conditioning scheduling process is used to mitigate susceptibility to crack initiation or crack growth in a boiling water nuclear reactor using a plurality of working crews. A plurality of working zones are defined in an annulus region of a reactor vessel flange, and a plurality working zones are defined in a core region of the reactor vessel. One of the working crews is positioned in each of the annulus region working zones, and one of the working crews is positioned in each of the core region working zones. The working crews perform surface conditioning in areas of the reactor vessel accessible from their respective working zones such that the surface conditioning process can be completed in no more than thirty days.

An apparatus and method arranged to use a combination of at least electrical resistance heating and mechanical friction heating to case a base material and/or a consumable material to reach a combination of temperature and pressure sufficient to cause welding. The method and apparatus configured for the simultaneous or substantially simultaneous application of both electrical resistance heating and friction heating to achieve welding is referred to as an electrofriction process, method or apparatus. This combination of resistance and friction heating allows the heating to be more localized within a relatively small weld zone, thereby improving the efficiency of the overall process and allowing the size, weight and strength and/or the cost of the application equipment and/or associated fixtures and power supplies to be reduced while enhancing its capability for operation in confined spaces and providing satisfactory welding performance.

Apparatus and method for electrofriction welding

A seal plate for repairing damaged areas in a pressure vessel cladding includes a first side and an opposing second side and a sealing portion located on the second side, with the sealing portion circumscribing the seal plate. The seal plate also includes a seal lip extending from a periphery of the sealing portion and a cavity located in the second side, with the cavity circumscribed by the sealing portion. The seal plate further includes at least one purge port extending from the first side to the cavity. Each purge port is in fluid communication with the cavity.

Apparatus and method for repairing reactor vessel cladding using a seal plate

A mechanical transducer induces liquid cavitation, causing pressure waves in a liquid which are applied against a metal surface to afford localized elastic and plastic tensile microstrain. The pressure waves alter the surface tensile stresses in the treated metal by reducing the tensile stresses or forming surface compressive stresses. A boot is provided about the operating face of the transducer for confining a liquid through which compression waves are generated and applied to the metal surface, the boot sealing about the transducer and the surface undergoing treatment.

Methods for altering residual stresses using mechanically induced liquid cavitation

For stress-crack-sensitive materials, a weld pool is formed on a substrate. The weld pool is simultaneously plastically strained and cooled while the temperature of the hot metal weld pool lies substantially within a predetermined range in which hot cracking typically occurs. The hot metal is plastically strained and cooled until the temperature of the weld material is below the predetermined temperature range associated with hot cracking or until residual stresses in the weld are sufficiently low to preclude cracking in the completed weld.

Method for welding on stress-sensitive materials

A component which has a surface crevice or crack and contaminants on at least one face of the opening is welded. The weld is effected by first plastically deforming the surface of the component to close the surface opening to a predetermined depth less than the depth of the opening and contaminated faces defining the opening to form a sealed ligament. The sealed ligament leaves unclosed a portion of the crack below the sealed ligament. The closed surface is hermetically sealed by fusion-welding to a depth of penetration equal to or less than the predetermined depth of the sealed ligament to minimize or eliminate expulsion of contaminants in the sealed ligament.

Fusion-welding of defective components to preclude expulsion of contaminants through the weld

A modular reactor servicing platform for a nuclear reactor is provided. The modular servicing platform includes a plurality of modular sections coupled together, a support structure coupled to the coupled together modular sections, a center access opening, and a refuel access channel extending from the center access opening to an outer edge of the platform forming a substantially C-shaped servicing platform. Each modular section includes a plurality of interconnecting beams, and at least one floor panel attached to and covering the beams.

Electrical resistance welding with low heat input in conjunction with applied forces effecting compressive forces in the weld are utilized to weld materials sensitive to hot cracking. An electrode coupled with a force applicator performs a low heat input resistance-type weld with triaxial compressive forces introduced in the weld to prevent or inhibit the formation of tensile induced cracks in the weld. This enables subsequent fusion welding overlying the initial weld without risk of hot cracking in the final weld.

Methods for resistance cladding and welding on hot crack susceptible materials

A housing for an underwater processing device, for example, welding, includes a welding head movable laterally relative to the housing and the direction of the weld. At opposite ends, gates are provided having arcuate convex surfaces forming edge seals for engaging in the groove of the work surface. In one form, the gates are linearly slidable and biased in a direction away from the housing. In another form, the gates are pivotally mounted for engaging in the grooves. In both cases, the compliant seal about the margin of the housing, together with the arcuate seal of the gates, maintains a substantially water-free area within the housing to enable processing.

Apparatus and methods for submerged processing of a grooved work surface using a movable gate

An underwater exclusion device includes a housing for a welding torch having leading and trailing arrays of pivotal fingers for engaging in grooves along a work surface to exclude water from an exclusion area within the housing containing the welding torch. The fingers are pivotally mounted and independently and individually movable under the bias of springs between retracted and extended positions. The fingers have radiussed distal ends for engaging the work surface. Upon application of the device to the work surface, the leading and trailing arrays of fingers are displaced under spring pressure to engage their distal ends against the work surface, excluding water from within the housing. The side walls of the housing carry seals for seating along the work surface to prevent water incursion in gaps between the side walls and the work surface.

Apparatus and methods for processing a submerged work surface

The method of fabricating low-cast, high-yield strength weld wire for welding includes displacing the weld wire through a rotary straightener having a pair of dies rotatable in opposite directions. Each die has a slider for introducing a bend in the wire as the wire is fed through entry and exit openings of the die. By rotating the dies in opposite rotational directions with bends introduced in the wire in the dies, the wire is cold work-hardened. The wire exiting the dies is wound on a spool. The weld wire when unwound from the spool has a low-cast and a high-yield strength.

Methods of fabricating mechanized welding wire

A housing for a processing device includes a plurality of independently extendible and retractable fingers for engaging the work surface. Gas pressure supplied within the housing drives the fingers into their extended positions and assists in excluding surrounding water from the work surface within the housing. The fingers may have fixed balls, roller balls or slidable wheels at their distal ends to facilitate movement of the housing along the work surface. Flexible skirts may be provided about the fingers to assist in water exclusion from the work area.

Apparatus and methods for submerged processing of a work surface

Two parts are welded together at a weld spot in a groove. A spot adjacent the weld spot is heated simultaneously and independently of the welding so that the heating and welding form a heat-treated weld bead along the groove. Preheat treatment, postheat treatment, or both, may be used simultaneously with welding to maximize performance of the resulting weld joint. Preheat and postheat treatment may be performed using lasers while the welding may be performed by TIG welding or laser welding. The welding torch and preheat and postheat lasers are coplanarly aligned.

Heat treatment for weld beads

An integrated non-consumable electrode and filler material nozzle for use with electric arc welding (or arc brazing). The electrode and filler nozzle are preferably integrated in one or more of the following ways: mechanically, thermally or electrically. The filler nozzle may be used to feed either hot or cold wire. Electric arc power and the wire resistance-heating power may be supplied by a single arc welding power supply, which is either directly or indirectly shunted between the electrode and filler nozzle. The nozzle can be designed to feed either single or multiple filler wires. The hot-wire nozzle preferably has a movable contact element which allows the electrical extension to be adjusted. Also the curvature of the outlet end of the hot-wire nozzle can be adjusted. If the nozzle is vertical, a wire deflection device at the nozzle outlet can be used to deflect the tip of the filler wire toward the weld puddle.

Method and apparatus for welding with preheated filler material

An apparatus for emitting a laminar flow of inert gas at a location inside a reduced-width, high-aspect-ratio (ratio of depth to width) weld groove. The portion of the gas distribution apparatus extending into the groove has a thickness less than the width of the weld groove and distributes inert gas which displaces the ambient atmosphere overlying the molten pool area at the bottom of the weld groove. The gas distribution apparatus may take the form of a tube, a planar array of mutually parallel tubes joined at the sides, a monolithic block having an elongated cross section with a parallel array of channels drilled or machined therein, or a support frame covered by a gas-permeable skin. To achieve a laminar flow, a gas diffusing structure is incorporated in each gas distribution tube. The gas diffusing structures include the following: a compression spring attached to the end of the gas distribution tube and having an opening which is covered by a porous or non-porous cover; a fine-mesh screen which is wrapped around the distal end of the gas distribution tube and having an opening which is closed by a porous closure; a metal wire wool or braided rope which is stuffed inside the tube; or a distal section of the tube is made from porous material and has an opening covered by a porous end cover.
