A vacuum waste system having reduced noise levels associated therewith. The vacuum waste system includes a sanitary unit for initially receiving waste. An intermediate container is connected to the sanitary unit by a first sewer pipe and a first sewer valve. A receptacle is connected to the intermediate container by a second sewer pipe and a second sewer valve. The system also includes a vacuum pump for generating vacuum in the second sewer pipe, intermediate container, and first sewer pipe. Transfer of waste from the sanitary unit to the receptacle is performed in two stages. In a first stage, the first valve is opened and the second valve is closed so that vacuum transports the waste from the sanitary unit to the intermediate container. In the second stage, the first valve is closed and the second valve is opened to transfer the waste from the intermediate container through the second sewer pipe. A flexible membrane is provided for adjusting the volume of the intermediate container to control the velocity of air entering through the first valve, thereby reducing noise. The flexible membrane increase the volume of the intermediate container during the first stage so that the intermediate container holds a sufficient amount of air at approximately ambient air pressure to perform the second stage.

Waste transport arrangement

A vacuum toilet unit comprises a toilet bowl, an operating mechanism for the toilet function, and an outer shell enclosing both the toilet bowl and the operating mechanism. In normal use of the toilet unit, substantially all of the externally applied load exerted by a user of the toilet is carried by the shell. In order to allow service access to the bowl and operating mechanism, at least a substantial portion of the shell is removable without any substantial influence on the support of the bowl or operating mechanism.

Vacuum toilet unit

A simplified vacuum sewer arrangement comprises a limited number of toilet bowls, preferably at the most 60 toilet bowls, which through a sewer pipe are connected to a common sewage collecting container, and a dry rotary vane pump for generating and maintaining a considerable partial vacuum in the sewer pipe and in the collecting container. The sewage collecting container is a relatively small reservoir which has to be frequently emptied and the volume of which is preferably at the most 100 liters. A liquid separator protects the pump from moisture. A rigidly installed tube and valve system connects the pressure side of the dry rotary vane pump periodically to the collecting container for emptying the container to another location by means of the pressure created by the dry rotary vane pump.

Vacuum sewer arrangement

A vacuum sewer arrangement comprises a valve controlled air inlet duct to let air into the vacuum sewer at a position downstream of the sewer valve. The sewer valve can then be closed immediately after the sewage has passed into the vacuum sewer, because the air required for the sewage transport is received from the air inlet duct. Hence, the amount of air that flows into the sewer through the sewer valve when the sewer valve opens is small, and when the sewer valve is closed, air flows through the air inlet duct into the sewer, which reduces the pressure difference acting on the sewer valve. These measures tend to considerably reduce the noise level. In the case of a vacuum toilet sewer arrangement, the noise level can be further reduced by providing the toilet bowl with a lid forming a substantially airtight and soundproof closure at the top of the bowl. The volume of air contained in the bowl may be too small for proper discharge of the sewage, in which case additional air can be provided through a separate tube. This tube may be connected to the air inlet duct upstream of its valve.

A sewer system in which partial vacuum is used for transporting sewage through a sewer pipe to a collecting chamber or the like. The system comprises only a few sewage producing units, preferably only one at a time usable unit. The length of the sewer pipe from a sewage producing unit to the collecting chamber is comparatively small and the operating devices of the system are arranged to generate vacuum in the sewer pipe principally only for the time required for transporting each separate sewage discharge emitted into the sewer pipe. Preferably, the operating devices are arranged to stop generating the vacuum before the actual transport of the sewage takes part.
