Disclosed are methods and devices for removing obstructive matter from anatomical passageways, including the removal of obstructive matter from the cerebral vasculature, prostatic obstructions from the urinary tract and/or obstructive matter from the fallopian tubes.

Ultrasonic devices and methods for ablating and removing obstructive matter from anatomical passageways and blood vessels

An ultrasound delivery catheter equipped and configured for concurrent delivery of drugs or therapeutic agents. The catheter comprises an elongate pliable catheter body having an ultrasound delivery member or wire extending longitudinally therethrough. A drug/therapeutic agent infusion lumen also extends longitudinally through the body of the catheter and opens distally through one or more outflow apertures at or near the distal end of the catheter body. The drug/therapeutic agent outflow apertures are preferably positioned and configured to cause the drug or therapeutic agent to flow in direction(s) non-parallel to the longitudinal axis of the catheter. The delivery of ultrasound through the catheter, concurrent with infusion of drug or therapeutic agent therethrough, will cause the drug or therapeutic agent to be disseminated or dispersed by the ultrasonic vibration or movement at the distal end of the catheter.

Method of using a catheter for delivery of ultrasonic energy and medicament

The ultrasonic angioplasty transmission wire has regions of reduced cross-sectional diameter to improve flexibility of the ultrasonic angioplasty transmission wire and to compensate for degradation of longitudinal displacement due to acoustic losses along the length of the ultrasonic angioplasty transmission wire. One or more constraining members are disposed on the ultrasonic angioplasty transmission wire at one or more of the regions of reduced cross-sectional diameter where transverse vibration of ultrasonic energy transmitted by the ultrasound transmission wire is amplified, to constrain transverse vibration at these areas to reduce stress and reduce fracturing, while allowing longitudinal movement. The transmission wire has an elongated shaft including, in atomic percent, from about 28 to about 52 percent nickel, from about 48 to about 52 percent titanium, and up to about 20 percent of at least one alloying element selected from the group consisting of palladium, chromium, and hafnium.

Ultrasonic angioplasty transmission member

An ultrasonic device and method for removing obstructive matter from an anatomical structure or passageway (e.g., blood vessel). The device comprises an elongate pliable catheter having a distal tip member attached to the distal end thereof, and an ultrasound transmission member which extends longitudinally therethrough to carry ultrasound from the proximal end of the catheter to the distal tip member. The distal tip member has a concave indentation formed in the distal surface thereof, and at least one inlet passageway extending therethrough in communication with a catheter lumen to facilitate suctioning of severed matter which becomes located within the concave indentation of the distal tip. The device may further incorporate means for infusing fluid (e.g., irrigation fluid, medicaments) separately or concurrently with the aspiration of the severed obstructive matter.

Ultrasonic angioplasty-atherectomy catheter and method of use

A method for treating obstructions of tubular anatomical passageways of the urinary tract, including the urethra and fallopian tubes, provides inserting an ultrasonic catheter device into an anatomical passageway, passing ultrasound to the distal end of the catheter and infusing liquid infusate to the distal end of the catheter to expel it through lateral fluid outflow apertures at a rate which will cause fluidic dilation of the anatomical passageway.

Ultrasound catheter having integrated drug delivery system and methods

An ultrasound system is disclosed having a catheter including an elongate flexible catheter body having at least one lumen extending longitudinally therethrough. The catheter further includes an ultrasound transmission member extending longitudinally through the lumen of the catheter body, the ultrasound transmission member having a proximal end connectable to an ultrasound transducer. The catheter also includes a distal head positioned on the distal end of the ultrasound transmission member. The catheter also has a coil with a proximal end connected to the distal end of the catheter body, and a distal end connected to the distal head. The coil defines a lumen communicating with the lumen of the catheter body. The ultrasound system also includes a sonic connector for coupling the ultrasound transmission member to the transducer. Different configurations are disclosed for the distal head and the ultrasound transmission member.

Methods of improving the circulation of blood to the muscle of the heart of a patient are disclosed. In a first method, a guidable elongated flexible ultrasound device is inserted into a patient's vasculature, and its distal end guided to an area of interest within the patient's heart to which increased blood flow is desired, where ultrasonic energy is applied to the area of interest via the distal end. In a second method, a distal end of an ultrasound device is directed into a patient's chest cavity, and guided within the patient's chest cavity to engage an exterior area of interest of the patient's heart to which increased blood flow is desired, where ultrasonic energy is applied to the area of interest via the distal end.

Ultrasound system and method for myocardial revascularization

A balloon catheter includes a flexible small-diameter guide wire provided with an enlarged-diameter distal end portion, and a flexible elongated tubular shaft with at least one dual-function fluid-conducting lumen adapted to both receive the guide wire extending therethrough, and to communicate pressurized inflation fluid to a distal balloon of the catheter. A distal orifice of the catheter communicates with the balloon and is provided with selective valving means for releasably engaging sealingly with the enlarged distal end portion of the guide wire. Apparatus is disclosed for axially moving the guide wire to effect engagement and disengagement of the enlarged distal end portion with the selective valving means of the catheter shaft. A torquer device is also provided by means of which the guide wire may be rotated relative to the catheter shaft for steering of the guide wire along a vascular pathway. A distal end tapered portion of the catheter shaft provides protection for a joint of the guide wire assembly. The tubular shaft of the catheter may extend through the balloon to provide better pushability for the catheter, especially in versions which employ a comparatively limp material for the balloon. Several alternative constructions for the selective valving means of the catheter shaft and for the enlarged distal end portion of the guide wire assembly are presented.

Ultrasound delivery catheters comprising elongate flexible catheter bodies having rigid distal tip or head members inserted into, and affixed thereto. At least one ultrasound transmission member extends longitudinally through the catheter body and is coupled to the distal tip or head member. Additionally, the invention provides methods for manufacturing such ultrasound delivering catheters.

Ultrasound delivery catheters incorporating improved distal tip

An ultrasonic angioplasty device comprising an elongate ultrasound transmission member having a proximal end attachable to an ultrasound generating device and a bulbous distal head or probe formed on the distal end thereof for effecting ablative treatment of an occluding lesion. The ultrasound transmission member may be formed of one or more superelastic metal alloys such as NiTi (50 at. % Ni). A guidewire lumen may be formed in the distal head or probe to permit passage of a guidewire therethrough. Portions of the ultrasound transmission member may be curved or bent. Portions of the ultrasound transmission member may be tapered or narrowed. One or more surface disruptions may be formed on the distal head or probe to improve treatment efficacy. An increased hardness coating or outer skin may be formed on the ultrasound transmission member. The device of the present invention may be incorporated into an angioscopic device.

Ultrasonic angioplasty device having surface disruptions

A catheter device incorporating combined ultrasound ablation and balloon dilation components. The catheter device generally comprises an elongate catheter body having proximal and distal ends and an outer surface. Disposed on the outer surface of the catheter body is a dilation balloon. At least one balloon inflation lumen fluidly connects the proximal end of the catheter body to the dilation balloon to permit injection of inflation fluid into the dilation balloon. Extending longitudinally through the catheter body is an ultrasound transmission member having a proximal end and a distal end, with the proximal end being connectable to an ultrasound transducer such that ultrasonic energy will pass through the ultrasound transmission member to the distal end thereof. In alternative embodiments of the present invention, there are provided catheter devices incorporating combined ultrasound ablation and laser ablation components as well as combined ultrasound ablation and atherectomy ablation components.
