A method of making a foam from a polymerizable resin includes the following steps. A thermally-activated initiator having a temperature below the initiation temperature is combined with an elevated-temperature solution having the polymerizable resin and carbon dioxide at a temperature above a promoted temperature to create a resulting mixture having a temperature above the promoted temperature. The resulting mixture is expanded by decreasing the pressure of the mixture to create a froth having a plurality of cells formed by carbon dioxide that expanded out of solution. The polymerizable resin within the froth is cured to create a foam.

Method of making foam

One aspect of the invention pertains to a device for mixing and dispensing fluids, which generally includes a housing; a mixing chamber having a first inlet for introducing a first fluid into the mixing chamber, a second inlet for introducing a second fluid into the mixing chamber, and an outlet through which fluid may exit the mixing chamber; and a valving rod received within the mixing chamber and movable between an open position, in which the first and second inlets are in fluid communication with the mixing chamber, a cleaning position, in which the valving rod substantially seals closed the first inlet but does not seal closed the second inlet, and a closed position, in which the valving rod substantially seals closed the first and second inlets.

A cleaning system is disclosed for pumping compressed air and cleaning solvent to the injection cartridge of a foam-in-place packaging system. The cleaning system comprises a solvent tank for containing a stock supply of solvent; a source of compressed air; and an air-activated submersible solvent pump in air flow communication with the compressed air source. The system also includes an injection cartridge of a foam-in-place packaging system in liquid communication with the solvent pump; and a regulator in air flow communication with the compressed air source, the pump, and the injection cartridge. The regulator distributes compressed air to operate the pump and to travel with solvent to the injection cartridge to provide a cleaning mixture of solvent and air to the cartridge.

Tip for a foam in place injection cartridge

The invention comprises a self-cleaning injection system for injecting foamable compositions into packaging applications. The system comprises an injection nozzle having an opening in one end from which mixed foam precursors which form foamable compositions may exit. The one end comprises a tip assembly which is porous to gases and to certain liquids, but which is impermeable to other materials such as the foamable compositions which may otherwise exit the housing only through said opening. A pump assembly pumps cleaning solvent from a solvent container to the injection nozzle while maintaining a constant delivery of air or a mixture of air and solvent to the injection nozzle. The pump assembly comprises a solvent container and an air compressor for sending air to the solvent container and for sending a mixture of solvent and air from the solvent container to said injection nozzle. The pump assembly is in communication with the injection nozzle so that a mixture of air and solvent may be sent from the solvent container to the pump assembly, to the injection nozzle and out of the porous tip assembly, to thereby help to clean accumulated foamable composition from the injection nozzle.
