An improved expansion joint assembly (10, 70) is provided for bridging an expansion void (12, 72) between adjacent, relatively shiftable structural sections (14, 6, 74, 76). The assembly (10, 70) includes a pair of supports (18, 20, 78, 80) respectively secured to the sections (14, 16, 74, 76), as well as a bridging member (22, 82) operatively engaging the supports (18, 20, 78, 80). A resilient compressible filler (24, 128, 130) is located between a bridging member (22, 82) and adjacent portions of the supports (18, 20, 78, 80). The filler (24, 128, 130) is preferably in the form of a compressible, resilient body including walls (62) defining a series of openings (64), so that the filler can accommodate significant movement without bulging or failure.

Expansion joint

A fire barrier is provided for use in connection with a structural wall having a hole through which a thermoplastic conduit normally extends. The barrier includes a housing having a side wall extending around the hole and the conduit, and defining an interior space extending between the conduit and the housing. A first end of the housing is attached to the structural wall, and the opposing end is closed around the conduit. A first support matrix is provided within the housing adjacent the second end, and defines a plurality of voids extending radially between the conduit and the side wall of the housing. A second support matrix provided adjacent the first axial end defines a plurality of longitudinal voids extending in a direction substantially parallel to the length of the conduit. An intumescent material substantially fills the voids of the support matrices so that as a fire adjacent the wall causes failure of the conduit, the intumescent material expands in the directions of orientation of the voids and forms a barrier that prevents the fire from propagating through the hole.

Fire barrier

A preferred expansion joint fire barrier includes two sheets of metal having rows of dimples defined in the respective surfaces thereof with a layer of fire resistant material between the sheets to form a fire barrier body presenting a concave configuration, and includes a pair of attachment strips extending outwardly from opposed side edges of the barrier body.
