An imposed shelf arrangement for vending tubular products such as cans and the like comprising a tray having a base, a rear panel and a pair of side panels or dividers forming a longitudinally disposed product feed trough having a width equal substantially to twice the length of a tubular product; a helix disposed centrally within said feed trough and adapted to receive a plurality of tubualr products between the convolutions thereof in a staggered relationship whereby the inner end of each tubular product is adapted to be disposed along the longitudinal axis of said trough; and a drive unit at the rear of the base for rotating said helix whereby to advance said tubular products one by one to the front edge of said base to drop to a delivery position.

In a vending machine shelf arrangement, wherein a combined helix unit and drive unit are vertically slidably mounted within a vertical slot formed in a rear panel mounted on the base of the shelf, an assembly for preventing accidental axial separation of a helix unit from a drive unit which includes a first disc element mounted at the rear end of the helix unit adjacent the rear panel and frictionally gripping a drive connection of the helix unit with the drive unit, and a second lip element upstanding on the shelf base and also adjacent the rear panel, the disc element interposed between the lip element and the rear panel thereby preventing normal separation of the helix unit from the drive unit.

Dispensing shelves for cabinet-type vending machines having a plurality of different sized helical feeder coils all on the same level for advancing articles interposed between the convolutions of the coils to a delivery opening. The width of the troughs holding the coils is variable on the same shelf level and the placement of the helical feeder coil within a trough is variable. The shelf is of either a sheet metal or a molded, high-density plastic type material. Drive units for the helical coils are removably mounted for operation without fastening devices and are adjustably laterally mounted within a single trough. A unique shelf support rail unit maintains the shelf side panels of the vending machine against lateral movement and bending. Further, a unique door closure member maintains the shelves in their vending positions at all times when the door is closed.

An electric water heater (10) for a vending unit has an elongated cylindrical housing (11) defining a water heating chamber divided lengthwise into a large inlet subchamber (24) and a small outlet subchamber (27) by a panel (26) extending the entire length of the heating chamber and supported by the arms (32, 33) of a lengthwise disposed U-shaped thickened embossment (14) integrally formed with the inner surface of the housing, with the U-shaped embossment (14) and panel (26) defining the outlet subchamber (27). Cold water enters the inlet subchamber (24) under control of a float valve unit (17) and is heated to a predetermined temperature by an electric heater (19) therein. The heated water then flows through a restricted opening (31) in the panel (26) into the outlet subchamber (27) for discharge from a fluid outlet (13). The smaller outlet subchamber (27) restricts convection action therewithin such that the hot water stored therein retains its heat longer than that stored in the inlet subchamber (24).

A vending machine (20) comprises a housing (21) and a pair of product vending shelf units (24, 26) mounted within the housing (21) in vertically stacked relation. Each shelf unit has a front end higher than the rear end thereof. A product selection mechanism (29) is mounted within the housing (21) for actuation of each of the shelf units (24,26) to vend a product (90) forwardly therefrom in response to a customer selection. An anti-theft product delivery drawer assembly (31) is mounted below the lower shelf (26) within the housing (21) and receives the vended product in an inner stored position, and exposes the product for retrieval by the customer upon the customer pulling the drawer outwardly, a drawer cover plate (153) slidable outwardly over the drawer (151) as the drawer is pulled outwardly for preventing access to the interior of the vending machine.

A vending machine (21) door closure mechanism (20) for providing pivotal movement of the door (52) from a closed position for vending purposes to an open position of approximately 100.degree.-110.degree. wherein the interior of the cabinet is accessible and one or more shelves (27) can be withdrawn, the closure mechanism (20) comprising a plate (66) secured to the top of the cabinet (22) and with a portion (69) extended forwardly beyond the front face (71) of the door (52); a flange (74) secured to the top of the door (52) and underlying the plate (66) with a pin (78) pivotally securing the plate (66) and the flange (74) together; and a panel (79) forming one end of the door (52), the panel (79) forming a relatively movable interlocking relationship at one vertical edge (81) with a corner (82) of the cabinet (22) and having a hinged relationship provided by a hinge ( 91) with an outer corner (70) of the door (52), the end panel (79) movably maintaining its closure position with the door (52) and cabinet (22) while the door (52) is swung openly; the door (52) capable of being swung to an approximate 270.degree. position up against the sidewall (23) of the cabinet (22) due to the temporary removal of a guard plate (93) which normally prevents the closure panel (79) from swinging free and out of its normal interlocking relationship.

Apparatus for dispensing newspapers, one at a time, having a frame with a wheel assembly movably attached thereto is provided for having wheels in contact with a stack of newspapers. The wheels have one-way bearings such that when the wheel assembly is pulled in a first direction, the wheels will not rotate and thereby frictionally engage a newspaper in contact therewith, thereby pulling the newspaper with the wheels. When the wheel assembly is pushed back in a second direction, opposite to the first direction, then the wheels are allowed to rotate against the next newspaper to be dispensed, to assume a ready position for the next operation. An assist mechanism is also provided for assisting the frictional engagement of a newspaper by the wheels and such assist mechanism has an adjustable feature for use with thin papers in one position thereof, or thick papers in another position thereof.

A connection apparatus for a vending machine of a type having a helically shaped member which is connected to a drive shaft in a novel manner. A one piece molded plastic member has a hub section for connection to the drive shaft and a plurality of radially extending arms for connection to a convolution of the helically shaped member.

A vending machine of a type having a plurality of coin releasable and manually operable pull rods for selectively releasing a product to a consumer. A novel mechanism is provided for selectively locking or releasing the pull rods. This mechanism includes a rod pivotally attached to a frame, the rod being attached to a first lever which is, in turn, operably connected to the pull rod and to a second lever which is, in turn, pivotally attached to a third lever. Structure is provided for causing the third lever to be biased to a position wherein the pull rods are locked; but, upon the insertion of a predetermined amount of money into the vending machine, one of the pull rods can be actuated to release a product due to a changing of the fulcrum of the third lever and simultaneous movement of the third lever and its associated locking structure to thereby unlock one of the pull rods.

Unlocking mechanism for a vending machine

A mechanism for selectively locking and releasing an actuating device for a vending machine. The actuating device, when unlocked and actuated, releases an item from the vending machine. The locking and releasing mechanism of the invention includes a shaft rotatably connected to the actuating device. A pair of arm members are attached to the shaft, one being rigidly attached and the other being rotatably attached with respect thereto. Springs are provided for biasing the arm members to a first position for locking the actuating device against an abutment surface connected to a frame member. A cam structure associated with the actuating device is provided for rotating the shaft to thereby unlock one of the arm members under certain circumstances. A projection of a coin registering mechanism is provided to cause unlocking of one or both of the arm members when a predetermined amount of money is registered on the coin registering mechanism.

Locking and releasing mechanism for a vending machine

A plurality of item discharge units disposed in side-by-side fashion within a vending machine, each unit including a tray with a selectively driven helix rotatably disposed therein. A divider member is mounted completely within the helix and extends along the length of the helix and upon the divider member and extends downwardly and at an angle therefrom on both sides of the divider to form spaces triangular in cross section between the divider and the walls of the tray.
