A system is set forth that includes storage, a first file system, a second file system, and a processing system. The first file system manages one or more files and/or directories on the storage, while the second file system manages content of one or more further files on the storage. The processing system is responsive to a triggering event. The processing system responds to the triggering event by re-mapping content from the second file system to the first file system while retaining the content at its original physical location on the storage so that the content is accessible through the first file system from its original physical location on the storage.

A method and system are disclosed that permit a host application to obtain cluster location data, for example logical addresses associated with the clusters of a file, and to allow a host application to communicate the logical block address mapping information to firmware of a storage device. The method includes the host transmitting one or more clusters or partial clusters having a signature to the storage device where the storage device knows or has been instructed by the host to look for the signature. The storage device may receive clusters having a signature and, responsive to a host request, return logical address information to a host for the location in the storage device of the marked clusters. The host may parse a data structure on the storage device to obtain remaining cluster location information using a file's first cluster location or may request that the storage device return the cluster location information.

In one embodiment, a host device creates a super-distribution token by encrypting a content encryption key with a super-distribution key and stores the super-distribution token and encrypted content retrieved from a source storage device in a target storage device. A storage device and method for providing a partially-encrypted content file to a host device are provided. In one embodiment, the storage device retrieves a content file from memory in the storage device and partially-encrypts the content file by encrypting some portions of the content file. The storage device sends the partially-encrypted content file to a host device and informs the host device of which portions of the partially-encrypted content file are encrypted. In one embodiment, the remaining portions of the content file are in clear text form and do not need to be decrypted. Because the host device only needs to decrypt the portions of the content file that are encrypted&#x2014;and not the entire content file&#x2014;the host device can decrypt the partially-encrypted content file, even if it does not have the processing power to decrypt a fully-encrypted version. In another embodiment, at least some of the remaining portions of the content file are encrypted with at least one additional key.

A personal proxy server is configured to acquire first data in response to a first request to access the first data and to acquire second data prior to receiving a second request to access the second data. The first request and the second request are received from a common source. The electronic library may have a stand-alone housing with a plurality of receptacles, at least two of the receptacles sized to connect with at least a first type of removable data storage device. A data access module in the housing may be configured to emulate a single removable data storage device containing data folders with corresponding to each removable data storage device. Methods for transmitting application specific or extended commands between a host and a memory card are disclosed. Commands for an extended card protocol are embedded in messages, along with a marker, in the data or command portion of a base card transmission protocol that is used to communicate between the host and the memory card. This allows for the transmission of application specific commands that lack a corresponding command in the base card protocol. The method can be implemented on the host side at the device driver level or the file level. In order to implement a read command in the extended card protocol, a write command in the base card protocol with an encapsulated read command in the extended protocol is first sent to a logical address, followed by a read command to the same logical address. Message set identifiers associate embedded commands and data received in separate transmissions.
