A method for controlling an engine and a belt-driven integrated starter (B-ISG) connected to the engine. The method includes determining engine running indicators and engine stopped indicators. Based on the indicators, the method controls the engine and the B-ISG for coordinating engine stops and starts with a capability of the B-ISG to start the engine.

Method and system for controlling a belt-driven integrated starter generator

A strategy to control and diagnose the operation of an electric motor using a sensorless control system augmented by feedback from a position and speed sensor is disclosed. The strategy can improve the robustness of operation and diagnose potential faults in electric motors. The present invention includes a method for diagnosing operation of an electric motor and a method and system for controlling an electric motor. In the diagnostic method, a sensorless system and a sensor based system are checked against each other to determine if either of the systems is faulted. In the control method, the sensor based control system is used when the motor speed is below a predetermined threshold and the sensorless system is used when the motor speed is above the predetermined threshold. The position sensor can be a low resolution position sensor, an engine crankshaft sensor, an engine camshaft sensor, or a transmission sensor.

Diagnostic strategy for an electric motor using sensorless control and a position sensor

An electrical machine drive system ( ) includes a DC power source ( ), an inverter ( ) and a three-phase electrical machine ( ). In response to a fault condition, power switches ( ) in the inverter are opened. Any short circuits are then determined by examining the phase currents of the three-phase electrical machine. If short circuits are found in the inverter, then the inverter is made balanced by shorting all upper braches ( ) or all lower branches ( ), depending on the location of the short circuit. Torque ripples are avoided by balancing the circuit during the fault mode, thereby providing comfort to a user of an electric or hybrid electric vehicle employing the electrical machine drive system.

Electrical machine drive method and system

An electrical machine drive system is simulated with a circuit simulator to model normal operation, fault modes and control strategies for electric motor based vehicles. The electrical machine drive system includes a DC power source model ( ), an inverter model ( ) and an electrical machine model ( ). The system is modified through substitution of components or removal of components to simulate faults. Post-fault control strategies are implemented in a similar manner and simulated. The model and methods associated therewith reduce modeling complexity and reduce simulation time, permitting thorough design and analysis of electric motor based vehicles.

Electrical machine drive system and method

A pulse width modulation circuit ( ) has a first set of windings with a first inverter circuit coupled thereto and a second set of windings having a second inverter circuit coupled thereto. A pulse width modulation controller pulse width modulates the first inverter circuit and the second inverter circuit so that the first inverter circuit has a predetermined phase shift therebetween to reduce input ripple.

Method and circuit for reducing battery ripple current in a multiple inverter system of an electrical machine

A method and system for determining bi-directional sneak current paths of an electrical/electronic circuit. The electrical/electronic circuit is converted into a corresponding schematic having a plurality of components and a plurality of line segments. A segment identifier is then inserted into each of the plurality of line segments. Next, a DC analysis is performed on the electrical/electronic schematic for each possible switch position combination to obtain a current value for each of the plurality of components. Bi-directional sneak current paths are then determined based on the plurality of segment identifiers and the current value for each of the plurality of components.
